Hello and welcome.
This is a grounding meditation for pet parents.
Living with a pet,
Whether it's a dog,
A cat,
A horse,
Or any other animal companion,
Can be a beautiful and rewarding experience.
They share your life.
They are there through the ups and downs.
You can rely on their steady,
Comforting presence.
And at the same time,
Life with a pet isn't always sunshine and roses.
There are moments that feel challenging.
Situations that test your patience.
And times when understanding each other doesn't come so naturally.
In this practice,
We'll take a moment to turn toward these experiences with awareness.
So you can stay connected to yourself,
Even in the midst of it.
Now take a moment to arrive.
Find a comfortable sitting position.
Let your spine lengthen slightly.
As if supported from above by a string attached to the crown of your head,
Allow your shoulders to drop,
Your hands on your thighs or in your lap.
And if it feels safe,
Close your eyes or simply lower your gaze.
Then bring your attention to your breath.
Breathing in.
Let your breath flow naturally.
No need to change anything.
And nothing else to do.
Just sitting.
Here.
Breathing.
Now bring your pet to mind,
Or if they are near you,
Simply notice their presence.
Try and see them as they are,
Not as you wish them to be.
Not as you fear they might be.
Just as they are,
Right here,
Right now.
And stay with this experience for a few moments.
Now imagine a situation with your pets that sometimes can feel a little challenging.
Something mild.
Something you can stay with for a little while.
Perhaps a moment on a walk,
Or circumstances when your pet is impatient,
Unsettled or afraid.
Let the scene form in your mind.
Take your time and keep breathing.
Now shift your awareness to your body.
Toward your physical sensations.
Keeping the situation you imagine in the back of your mind.
What is happening in your body in this moment?
Is there tension somewhere?
Perhaps in your shoulders,
Your hands,
Your chest?
Somewhere in your face?
What about your breathing?
Is there a change there?
Or does your heartbeat change?
Just notice.
No need to control anything.
Take your time and keep breathing.
Now move your focus to your emotions while there is still an echo of the challenging situation with your pet in your mind.
How do you feel?
What do you feel?
Maybe there's one clear emotion that takes up a lot of emotional space.
Anxiety,
Frustration,
Impatience.
Or maybe there is a mix of emotions.
Whatever is present,
Let it be there.
Take your time and keep breathing.
As you stay with it,
See if you can sense where in your body this feeling lives.
Perhaps in your chest,
Your belly,
Your throat or some other part of your body.
Stay with that sensation.
Breathing in and breathing out.
Maybe you can try to create a little space around the emotion or the mix of emotions.
Maybe instead of thinking,
I am frustrated,
Anxious or impatient,
Try telling yourself that you are experiencing frustration,
Anxiety or impatience.
Because you are not your emotions.
You are the one experiencing them.
And from this place,
Just observe.
Take your time and keep breathing.
And maybe you'd like to go just a little bit further and if it feels safe,
You might become a little curious.
If this feeling had a shape,
What would it be?
If it had a texture,
A temperature,
A smell or a taste,
What would it be?
There's no right answer,
There's just your experience.
Take your time and notice what comes up for you,
Without resistance or judgement.
And keep breathing.
Sometimes emotions are not so easily calmed,
Even if you try to create space around them.
If that happens to you,
Don't fight it.
Let whatever you feel be there,
Exactly as it is.
You might tell yourself,
This emotion is allowed to be here.
And I can be with it.
Notice what happens when you soften,
Even slightly.
Is there maybe just a little more space inside you?
A tiny shift?
This can happen when you stop resisting what is here.
And your pet,
They can feel that.
Stay here for another few moments and keep breathing.
Now let go of the imaginary situation and the emotions it evoked.
And widen your attention again to include your pet as they are in this moment.
Look at them with fresh eyes,
Not through the lens of habit or expectation.
Observe them.
What are they doing?
Can you tell what they might be feeling?
And what might they need in this moment?
No need to be certain,
Just allowing the possibility of understanding without knowing.
Now let all the images and emotions and thoughts fade and come back to your breath and back to your body.
Feel the ground beneath you,
Your body sitting here,
Your body breathing.
