Hello and welcome.
If you're listening to this track at night,
Chances are that you have trouble sleeping,
Because you might be feeling a sensation that might seem louder in the quiet darkness than it is during daytime hours.
Maybe a restlessness in the legs,
Maybe a tightness somewhere you didn't notice before,
Or a dull pain you managed to ignore during your busy day,
And suddenly fear wakes up.
I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with you.
This is a very human nighttime pattern.
The mind has a habit of amplifying things when the world around us is still.
So,
What we are going to do together is to soften the edges of that fear.
You don't need to make the sensation disappear.
You don't need to push your anxious thoughts away either,
And you don't need to force yourself to fall asleep despite everything.
You can just rest here.
So lay down,
Or sit comfortably,
Whatever suits you best.
Let the covers,
The bed,
Or the couch support you.
Let your eyes close,
Or lower your gaze.
This practice meets you exactly where you are.
Begin by noticing your breathing,
And know you don't need to change it.
Just feel it moving in and out of your body.
In.
Out.
In.
Feel the weight of your body being held by the surface beneath you,
And listen to the quiet around you.
And then,
Bring awareness to the sensation that frightened you.
Not to judge it,
Just to acknowledge its presence.
Silently say to yourself,
Something is happening in my body.
There is no danger,
No emergency.
There is just this sensation.
And if your mind leaps to worst case stories,
Simply label the thoughts as thinking or worrying.
Nighttime thoughts are not truth,
And not evidence of anything.
They are just thoughts that are somewhat louder without the daylight.
Return to your breathing,
And if it feels comfortable,
Let your exhale lengthen slightly.
Let your body be supported,
And keep breathing.
Sensations often feel bigger at night,
Not because they are dangerous,
But because there is less distraction.
But you can feel intensity without assuming the worst.
You can sit or lie here with uncertainty and still be safe.
Your body is allowed to make noises,
Pulses,
Twitches.
It's what bodies do,
Especially when they are settling down for the night.
Fear tends to be louder at night,
But safety still exists here,
Within you.
Now let your awareness widen.
Notice the temperature of the air,
The weight of the blankets on your body,
The support of the surface beneath you.
Maybe there's the ticking of a clock,
Or if you have a pet,
Their breathing or snoring.
Let yourself be held by the night,
Rather than be afraid of it.
You don't need answers right now,
All you need is presence.
Notice how you feel now,
As compared to when we started the practice.
Maybe tired,
Maybe a little calmer,
Maybe simply less startled than before.
All of that is normal and welcome.
Return to this track anytime night-time fears begin to rise,
And if you want to go even deeper,
You're welcome to join my chorus,
