Yesterday I was making coffee.
I had gotten up early before my alarm and everyone in the house was sleeping,
Including our pets.
It was so quiet outside because it was snowing and there is this extra special quiet when it snows.
Like it's snowing outside your window and it's quiet outside,
But somehow that still quiet seeps into the house.
And the sun was just beginning to rise,
So the lighting in the house was soft.
There was no bright sun coming in because of the snow.
And I remember walking down to the kitchen,
Putting the water into the filter.
I remember grinding the coffee beans.
I remember pouring the water into the kettle and then just standing there.
I was probably still half asleep,
So I was just standing there waiting for the water to boil.
You don't want to make too much noise because like I said,
Everyone was asleep.
And once the water began to boil,
I went over and picked up the kettle and I began to pour it over the ground coffee.
And while I was doing that,
I noticed I was looking at my hands that was pouring the water.
And in that moment,
I guess I was just completely present with what I was doing.
And I was kind of lost in the circular movement of the water pouring over the grounds.
And what happened was this small internal smile began to wash over my face.
And I noticed it.
I noticed this smile that was not just on the outside,
It was coming from inside.
And in that moment,
I became so grateful that I had that internal smile.
It began to feel that I was unintentionally becoming intentional with making my coffee.
And from there,
All of a sudden,
I had this tsunami of gratitude that just rose from within me.
I saw this smile,
Right?
And all of a sudden,
I was grateful for the quiet in the house,
And the snow outside,
And the smell of the coffee,
And the fact that all of the people and animals I love in my house were sleeping in their own dreamscape.
I had this gratitude for the socks that I was wearing,
For being able to witness my own making of coffee.
It was this blossoming of gratitude that just began to fill me.
And it was happening while I was pouring the water over the grinds,
And waiting for the coffee to filter out,
Pouring the water over the grinds again,
And waiting for the coffee to filter out.
And it was such a beautiful moment.
And after I made my coffee,
I had the coffee in my mug,
One of my favorite mugs,
And I went down to our garage.
I opened up the garage door,
And I just sat in the cool air of snow,
In the quiet,
Both inside my house and outside.
And I enjoyed that cup of coffee.
Life can move quickly.
Days can feel endless,
Or they can feel fleeting,
They can feel light,
And they can feel heavy.
But there's always a way to ground.
And sometimes it's in the most ordinary of rituals.
Sometimes it's in that thing that you do every day when you wake up,
Like making coffee.
And when you find yourself just fully present in it,
And you can see the magnificence and the brilliance of these moments that we walk through every day,
The beauty of pouring water over coffee grinds,
These moments can birth in us deep gratitude for being human.
So I just wanted to share that.
I'll be sharing a few more ordinary,
Everyday moments,
And how for me,
They have really blossomed into the extraordinary.
Thank you so much for joining me in this little few minutes of story.
Namaste.
