Concentrate every day like a Roman This rather famous quote from Mox Aurelius comes from the distinction many made between the Greeks and the Romans.
You see,
The Greeks were famous for revolutionizing the way the world thought.
There was a new way of thinking,
A way of questioning everything,
Including our own existence.
They prided themselves on getting to the bottom of things,
How the universe was made,
Why we were here and what everything was made of.
All worthwhile things for sure,
But there was a distinct lack of actually using that information.
In a simplified way,
They were all theory and no action.
All abstract,
No concrete.
Or one of my favorites,
They were all shirt and no trousers.
It reminds me of the primary school motto we had at my school in Botswana.
Deeds,
Not words.
The Romans decided to put these ideas to work and built and constructed and innovated and they got things done.
Not just thoughts,
But actions.
As Seneca would later write,
Don't tell me about being a good man,
Be one.
Mox Aurelius also took pride in how the Romans did things,
But also the pride they took in how they did them.
Something he thought we should all do.
And this reminds me of another story,
The one of the samurai and the tea master.
A tea maker for a samurai was challenged to a duel by a rival samurai who was offended by him.
Now,
The tea maker,
Of course,
Just being a tea maker,
Was terrified of the outcome,
Recognized his fate.
He went to his master and said to him,
Would you please at least show me how to fight and if I must die,
Die with honor in combat so I don't look silly with the sword.
Instead of giving him a master class in sword work,
The master asked him to make him some tea and he watched him.
He watched him as the fear disappeared and as he carried out his tea ritual with precision and care.
The master explained that by using focus,
You can alleviate fear and you can achieve what is needed.
The tea maker then showed up for the duel the next day,
Confident and ready to focus like he did on his tea,
But still ready to die.
The opposition samurai looked at him and noticed that he was unnerved,
Confident and calm and decided this must be a trap and bowed,
Apologized and went on his way.
See,
Here we see the secondary benefit of concentration,
Its ability to break us free of our worries.
So not only is concentration a way of getting things done and doing them well,
But a worthwhile endeavor,
But a worthwhile endeavor to achieve calm.
It's really the secret behind meditation,
That even when we do nothing,
If we can concentrate,
We can find equanimity in the nothingness.
So thanks for concentrating here,
Now go off and be that Roman and get things done.
