Hello,
Hello.
I am going to interrupt Busy Mind Week to offer you a little story,
A story of a big moment in my life,
A high-definition moment,
Actually a couple.
And I relay this story because this moment was so impactful in my life and it set me on a path of noticing high-definition moments.
And high-definition is so much the ground from which I speak and why I do what I do.
High-definition is a moment when your world lights up,
When your senses are heightened,
Where your mind is locked in the present moment.
It's when we experience ourselves,
Our lives in such a way,
In such an aliveness that makes everything make sense.
It just brings everything into perspective.
And so I was reminded of this story because my daughter,
My firstborn,
Christina Marie,
Turns 27 today.
And when she was born,
She was born at 1 a.
M.
In the morning,
I went to sleep at some time,
It must have been about 3 a.
M.
,
And it was early morning,
So who knows what time,
But still dark.
And the nurse came in with her and said that she was cold,
That the baby had a little drop in temperature,
And suggested that,
You know,
Took all her clothes off,
Except her diapers,
And put her on my bare chest.
So it was skin on skin and under the covers.
I get choked up when I think about this moment because we sat there for,
I don't know how long,
Because I was so locked in the present moment.
And her big eyes looked at my eyes.
Oh God.
And we,
It was as if we knew each other forever.
This newborn baby that had been growing inside of me,
And we locked eyes like I have never locked eyes with a human before or since.
And there was some deep ancient memory of each other.
And we just hugged skin on skin.
And time stood still.
And my world exploded,
And I felt a love and a joy and intimacy like I never have.
That,
My friend,
Is a high definition moment.
And we have these mini moments,
These glimpses of life in high definition.
Sometimes they're just a few seconds.
But those are the moments that we want to recognize.
And when we start to recognize them,
Those are the moments that we start to live for.
That's when life makes sense for us.
It's not in the busy mind.
It's not in the busyness.
It's not in the drama,
In the drain,
In the exhaustion,
In the anger that's in our world right now.
It's in those impenetrable moments when we are locked in presence.
I had another moment like that when my dad passed.
I was with him,
My mom and my older brother.
And it was just like the moment when my daughter was born.
It had so many of the same qualities,
Locked in presence and love.
When time stands still,
My senses heightened.
Oh my goodness.
We have big moments like this to remind us of the immensity of life.
To remind us that there are these cracks in the wall when the light gets in,
As Leonard Cohen said.
So for today,
I remind you to think of your big moments,
Because you've had them.
And to allow and allow the essence of those big moments to remind you to look for the glimpses every single day.
They are there.
So tell me,
Reach out and let me know your big moments.
Let me know your small moments.
Let us share in this human experience,
Because we can remind each other.
We can walk each other home,
As Ram Dass said.
So a little brief interruption of Busy Mind Week will continue next week.
