Students will learn eight mantras during this course, inviting much goodness into their lives through the mantras. Background about the mantras and guidance on pronunciation and chanting will be given. Students are invited to live into the mantras and the devotion and bliss that they unlock. Mantras from the Vedic tradition, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Christianity are featured to present a diverse exploration of sacred mantras.


Meet your Teacher

Megan Hook is a yoga teacher, kirtan wallah, meditation teacher, and professional musician. She has practiced hatha, kundalini yoga, and Buddhism for over twenty-five years. She is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with a degree in classical music from Ithaca College. Megan has been sharing and recording sacred mantras for the past ten years. As a songwriter, she has been inspired to release her original settings of mantras and chant traditional versions. Megan is a certified secular mindfulness teacher trained through the UCLA MARC program and Mindful Schools. Megan received the 5 Mindfulness training at Deer Park Monastery in the tradition of Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh.

Lesson 1

Om, The Primordial Mantra

Om is the primordial mantra, a Bīja syllable that is said to have initiated the birth of the cosmos. During this module we will consider Om, learn the Nādanusandhana practice from the Hatha Yoga Pradapika, and chant Om.

Lesson 2

Ganesha Mantra

In the Vedic traditional, one chants to Ganesha first, before any other deity. Ganesha is a powerful deity that blessings the path, removes obstacles, protects us from danger, and brings success. This setting is a traditional chant and melody: Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.

Lesson 3

Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya

In this lesson, we chant the beloved traditional mantra Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya. Shiva is one of the most powerful Hindu Gods, the Adi Yogi, an ascetic, the Destroyer, and the Cosmic Dancer whose dance can bring bliss or destruction. Connecting with the power of Shiva is grounding and clarifying.

Lesson 4

Kali Durga Mantra

The divine feminine is powerfully represented in Sanātana Dharma and yoga. In this mantra we honor the fierce Mother Protectress, Durga, as well as Kali, the Goddess of Destruction. "Jai Mata Kali, Jai Mata Durga" - Victory to Mother Kali, Victory to Mother Durga.

Lesson 5

Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo

This beautiful mantra comes from the Sikh tradition and was integrated into yogic practice through Kundalini Yoga. The meaning of the manta is succinct and clear: I bow to and honor the divine teacher. This is my own setting and I added in the eight names of Har from Sikhism. Har, pronounced "hud," is the formless, omnipresent aspects of the divine. Sat Nam!

Lesson 6

Om Mani Padme Hum

Om Mani Padme Hum is one of the most beloved Buddhist mantras, it is chanted across different sects in multiple languages. We will chant it in Sanskrit. This mantra refers to the "jewel in the lotus". The jewel purifies our body, speech, and mind, turning us from hatred, greed, and confusion to peace, compassion, and wisdom. May it be so. This is a setting I created.

Lesson 7

Kyrie Eleison

This Greek mantra/prayer is from the Christian tradition. It is a petition to God and Christ to have mercy upon us and the world. This is a setting I created. I added in the beginning of the "Glory Be" in Latin at the very end: Gloria Patri et Filio and Spiritui Sancto, glory to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Lesson 8

The Longtime Sun Mantra

This mantra is often chanted at the end of kundalini yoga classes, however it was originally an Irish Blessing and has elements of a pagan or earth-based wisdom tradition. This is a setting I created. Sending blessings to you upon the completion of the course: may "the pure light within you, guide your way on."
