Keys To Overstanding

With Tom Evans

The Keys to Overstanding is a course of awakening consisting of 23 meditative journeys and meditales. It is the first of a series of courses I will launch on the app which together will form a complete Path to Overstanding. This first course is an introduction of the keys of Major Arcana of the Tarot. I like to think of each key as being a mode of consciousness which I describe as being a flavour of thought. Note that this course is designed both for those already familiar with the Tarot and those who are new to it. While the course is inspired by the Tarot, it is not about the Tarot per se, it is about us. As you listen to each lesson in this course, you will start to think subtly differently. By the end, your mind will be awakened to a new state of being.

Meet your Teacher

Tom is a modern day mystic, scribe and seer. His passion is to take the esoteric, the unknown, and make it exoteric, known and understood. He is a master at simplifying what is complex and he does this using a mix of gentle explanation, storytelling and even just using ambient sound. He writes in trance too so his words entrance the listener or the reader. Much of his teaching operates at an unconscious level such that, a few days later, you become conscious of the lesson. If you want magic to come into your world, tune into his meditations, music, musings and courses.

Lesson 1

Key #1 : Decision

In this first exploration, we will be looking at the male magic of Key 1 from the Tarot, The Magician, which I describe as being the flavour of thought concerned with making a decision. Have a journal handy to make notes as you listen.

Lesson 2

Key #2 : Validation

In this next step we will explore the female magic of The High Priestess, or validation as a flavour of thought. This key acts as a check and balance on the previous key. Again, have your journal handy.

Lesson 3

Key #3 : Deduction

This next key gives perspective on our decision making process via the flavour of deduction and the third key of the Empress. Again it takes input from the previous keys.

Lesson 4

Key #4 : Composition

We next visit another key influenced by male magic. The fourth key is the Emperor in the Tarot and the flavour of thought of composition. It is where Key 1 starts to make magic really manifest.

Lesson 5

Key #5 : Adaptation

This next key calls for us to adapt the way our conscious mind connects with the collective consciousness. The flavour of adaptation is inspired by the Tarot Key, The Heirophant, who you can think as being a scribe or seer.

Lesson 6

Key #6 : Discrimination

The 6th Key of the Lovers is encapsulated by the flavour of discrimination. As we live in a duality, with both light and shadow, it is important to see everything from at least two perspectives.

Lesson 7

Key #7 : Cultivation

The seventh key of the Chariot is influenced by the six keys that precede it. It acts as a container for these keys and calls us to cultivate the vehicle for our soul which is our body.

Lesson 8

Key #8 : Moderation

This is the first of seven keys that influence our unconscious mind. In this meditation, we will become conscious of usually unconscious processes. With these next seven keys, we tap into our lower mind centres.

Lesson 9

Key #9 : Isolation

The ninth key is the Hermit in the Tarot. It is a reminder that we must pause and reflect from time to time before embarking on new ventures. It is a nudge from our soul to come in from the soul and to step up to what it is we came to do.

Lesson 10

Key #10 : Replication

Unconscious action requires us to replicate something that we have already learned and mastered. When we become conscious of the layers involved with unconscious processes, we break karmic bonds and evolve. This is encapsulated by the Tarot key of The Wheel of Fortune.

Lesson 11

Key #11 : Equilibrium

This meditation explores the notion of balance, in both space and time, and how we need a wobble now and again to stabilise our lives. It is the creation of ripples in space and time that drives us onwards and upwards. Justice in the Tarot is this stabilising force.

Lesson 12

Key #12 : Revolution

This meditation shows how keys interoperate with each other. When we combine keys together, we create what I call a “recipe for fresh thinking”. The upside down thinking of The Hanged Man is useful in this regard.

Lesson 13

Key #13 : Imagination

The 13th key explores why death is an integral part of life. Only by imagining a better life for us, and others, can it come into being. This involves the death of old ways so that the new can come along.

Lesson 14

Key #14 : Adaptation

As the seventh key of the middle row, it encapsulates and summarises the six other keys in this row of unconscious influences. It is the key of Temperance in the Tarot and the flavour of adaptation.

Lesson 15

Key #15 : Perception

They say that the devil is in the detail. In this meditation on the key of the Devil, we explore some detail around the notion of the devil and how he or she is man-made.

Lesson 16

Key #16 : Excitation

This meditation is somewhat longer than the others as it involves the construction of a tower of strength using all the preceding keys on which we will build upon further. Have your journal handy.

Lesson 17

Key #17 : Germination

This meditation gives guidance on how to connect the Above to Below in a way that may be new to you. Rather than being the connector, in this chakra balancing process you become the flow itself.

Lesson 18

Key #18 : Reception

Next we prepare ourselves to become a receiver for the cosmic consciousness. Note that this involves moving our awareness to our cerebellum at the rear of our brain.

Lesson 19

Key #19 : Collection

We are perhaps unique on planet earth as being collectors. We collect both objects and ideas in be. Once collections form, new connections can be brokered.

Lesson 20

Key #20 : Extension

The 20th key of the Tarot is Judgement which I call extension in the flavours of thought. It’s time to extend your capabilities and your scope and reach.

Lesson 21

Key #21 : Comprehension

In this last of 21 keys, we explore the patterns in the keys and the potential ways to combine multiple keys together. It is called The World in conventional Tarot and I like to think of it as being the thought flavour of comprehension.

Lesson 22

Key #22 & Key #0 : The Fool’s Journey

This last key from conventional decks is also often the first key. You will find it called the Zero or 22nd key of The Fool. I like to think of it as the thought flavour we hold when encounter the blindly obvious.

Lesson 23

Key #23 : Mastery

We wrap this series of meditations up with the overstanding key of Mastery. This is what happens when we become unconsciously competent and see the whole while also understanding the detail of the parts. This is true overstanding of course.

Thanks for another fascinating course Tom! To me, the course is like The Chariot taking me on my path. Thank you for sharing this on IT. I do intend to lay the cards out in 3 rows of 7 and listen to the course again. There is so much to reflect upon and absorb!

Deeply impactful. Really made me think in a different frame of reference and challenged me in many ways. I appreciate the time, thought and effort Tom must have put into creating the course. It also reinforced the need to look out for serendipities and messages.
