Inner Stability In Difficult Times

With Martine Genicot

Equanimity is at the heart of inner stability—the capacity to remain centered when life feels uncertain. In this course, we explore this quality through the Eight Worldly Winds, the universal forces that move through every human life: pleasure and pain, praise and blame, gain and loss, fame and disgrace. These winds are always in motion, sometimes gentle and sometimes overwhelming. Through these sessions, you will learn to notice how these experiences move through body and mind, and how to return again and again to a steady, grounded presence. This is the essence of equanimity: not avoiding life’s changes, but learning to meet them with balance, clarity, and calm. This course can be taken on its own or as a deepening of the practices in Staying Grounded in Daily Life. Both journeys are designed to support you wherever you are on your path.

Lesson 1

The Eight Winds Of Life

In this opening session, we begin exploring the Eight Worldly Winds and the foundations of equanimity. Through the metaphor of a sailboat on a wide lake, you are invited to notice the movements of life—the inner and outer winds that push and pull—while learning to remain grounded and centered. You will explore the body as the frame, the breath as the sail, and awareness as the compass, gently supporting your ability to navigate life with greater calm, balance, and inner stability.

Lesson 2

Equanimity With Pleasure And Pain

In this session, we explore the first pair of the Eight Worldly Winds: pleasure and pain. These experiences arise in the body as ease, discomfort, warmth, tension, or restlessness. Through guided meditation, we learn to stay present with sensations as they are, noticing tendencies to cling to pleasure or resist discomfort. By practicing softening and openness, we discover it is possible to meet even intense sensations with balance, care, and awareness. This practice invites us to relate to pleasure and pain with steadiness, kindness, and presence.

Lesson 3

Equanimity With Praise And Blame

In this session, we turn our attention to the mind — to thoughts and emotions. We explore the social winds of life: praise and blame. Thoughts and emotions can arise like weather in the sky, sometimes clear and bright, sometimes cloudy or stormy. Equanimity is remembering that you are the sky, not the weather. Through meditation, we practice noticing these social winds as they appear, change, and pass, cultivating an inner steadiness that is not shaken by others’ words.

Lesson 4

Equanimity With Gain And Loss

In this session, we explore the winds of Gain and Loss — the social and material changes in life, from successes and achievements to setbacks and endings. Life is always moving: what comes will eventually leave. Equanimity is the wisdom of the open hand, allowing us to receive what arises without clinging, and release without collapsing. Through meditation, we practice staying steady as these changes unfold, noticing the impulses to hold on or resist, and cultivating a calm presence that remains open to the flow of life.

Lesson 5

The Great Equanimity

In this final session, we bring together all the Eight Worldly Winds: pleasure and pain, praise and blame, gain and loss. We explore how steadiness in the body, mind, and heart allows us to cultivate a calm, open presence that naturally extends to others. Through guided meditation, we practice resting in inner steadiness, observing the movement of life without grasping or resisting, and discovering how equanimity naturally gives rise to compassion.
