Embody Ganesha: A Practice For Real Life

With Rachel Zinman

Ganesha is one of the most beloved and recognisable figures in the Hindu tradition — but he is so much more than a statue on a shelf or an image on a wall. He is a living map for navigating the obstacles of real life. In this three-day course, globally recognised yoga teacher and mentor Rachel Zinman brings Ganesha off the page and into your body. Drawing on over 35 years of teaching experience and a deep fascination with Hindu mythology from a western practitioner's perspective, Rachel makes these ancient teachings immediately relevant — practical, accessible, and genuinely transformative. Over three days you will explore the mythology and symbolism of Ganesha, discover what his story reveals about your own mind and the obstacles you face, work with a powerful mudra sequence to embody his qualities, and move through a grounding and expansive yoga practice inspired by the elephant energy at the base and throat chakras. This is a course about recognition — recognising the wisdom, strength, and clarity that you already are and always were. By the end of this course you will: • Understand the mythology and symbolism of Ganesha and what it means for your everyday life • Have a direct experience of what it feels like to embody Ganesha's qualities through meditation, mudra, and movement • Have tools to work with obstacles — mental, emotional, and physical — in a practical and embodied way • Feel more grounded, clear, and expansive in body and mind

Meet your Teacher

Rachel Zinman is a globally recognised yoga teacher, teacher trainer, and senior yoga mentor with over 35 years of teaching experience and more than 40 years of personal practice. She has taught nationally and internationally since 1992, bringing the depth of the classical yoga tradition into contemporary, accessible form. Rachel has a particular passion for the Hindu deities — as living mythological maps for understanding our own psychology, our obstacles, and our innate wisdom. She has been teaching the deities all over the world, drawn to the way these ancient stories translate directly into modern life. Her approach is that of a western practitioner with a deep fascination for myth: grounded, practical, and genuinely curious. As one student recently reflected, they appreciated the way Rachel explains the deities from a perspective that is both western and immediately applicable. Rachel is also a published author, a prolific yoga writer, and a certified yoga teacher trainer who has mentored yoga teachers for over 25 years. She is based in Byron Bay, Australia.

Lesson 1

You Are Ganesha: The Knowledge That Sets You Free

We begin where all great stories begin — with the birth of Ganesha. In this opening session, Rachel shares the mythology of Ganesha in full: the story of Parvati, Shiva, and the clay boy whose head was cut off and replaced with an elephant's, and what that extraordinary myth reveals about consciousness, thought, knowledge, and what it means to be human. We explore the rich symbolism of the elephant head, the broken tusk, the pot belly, the rat, and more, as a living language for understanding your own inner world. The session closes with a guided visualization and intention-setting practice, planting a personal seed of wisdom that will carry through the rest of the course.

Lesson 2

Wisdom At Your Fingertips: The Ganesha Mudra Sequence

When we meet an obstacle, we have two choices — raw grit or strategy. Mudras are a strategy. They are knowledge made tangible, a direct line to the rational, discriminating mind that Ganesha represents. In this session, Rachel guides you through a carefully chosen sequence of mudras, each one unlocking a specific quality — fearlessness, strength, abundance, letting go, deep listening, and inner knowing. Held in stillness and silence, each mudra becomes a doorway to your own quiet power. The mudra sequence: • Anjali Mudra — opening, the flame of light between the palms • Ganesha Mudra — strength, courage, heart-opening • Akash Mudra — space, expansion, dissolving obstacles • Abhaya Mudra — fearlessness, courage to move forward • Mahakarna Mudra — strength, listening, receiving • Kubera Mudra — abundance, spiritual and material prosperity • Pushan Mudra — letting go, moving forward • Vyapaka Anjali Mudra — offering and receiving as equal acts of strength • Gyan Mudra — knowledge, self-recognition • Nirvala Mudra — the inner self, holding what has been received • Return to Anjali Mudra — closing, integration

Lesson 3

The Ganesha Yoga Practice

Ganesha lives in the body. In this closing practice, we locate him in two places — at the root, where the seven-trunked elephant of Muladhara grounds us through the legs, feet, and earth beneath us, and at the throat, where the single upward-reaching trunk of Vishuddha opens us through the shoulders, arms, and sky above. Standing poses, balancing poses, and shoulder openers weave together into a practice that asks you to be both entirely grounded and entirely free at the same time. We close with a Ganesha meditation — returning to the intention you planted in Day 1 and feeling it alive in your body.
