Are you ready to meditate with Kari?

Make sure that you're all snuggly and warm in your bed.

The light is just right and you can relax your body and let go of a busy day.

Max was a monkey that lived in a jungle with a lot of other monkeys.

If you know anything about monkeys,

You know that they like to be together.

They stay together.

There's an hierarchy with monkeys,

Like a ranking.

Some of the monkeys are lead monkeys.

Some of the monkeys are more submissive and they follow the leaders.

Some of the monkeys,

Depending on what they've done,

Even get banished from the monkey community.

Max was,

You could say,

One of the leaders.

He was a leader because Max was angry a lot.

Being angry didn't make him a leader,

But the way he behaved when he was angry made him quite scary.

And because he was scary,

A lot of the monkeys just followed everything he said.

This was something Max was not proud of.

Max actually really disliked the fact that he got angry so easy.

To Max,

It meant he was weak in a way.

He felt weak.

He felt disappointed in himself every time he got angry.

And this made him feel weak because he felt like he couldn't control himself.

But the truth was,

Everyone gets angry sometimes.

And it's okay to get angry because it's just an emotion that we feel while we're here on Earth.

But for Max,

His problem was he got angry every day.

There was one friend that he had that was a really loyal friend that wasn't a follower but wasn't a leader either.

This monkey was called Sebastian.

And Sebastian had been Max's friend since they were really small.

And that's why they were still friends.

Sebastian didn't care whether Max was a leader or a follower.

He just liked Max for who he was,

Even though Max was angry a lot.

Sebastian could see through Max's anger.

Sebastian knew that Max got angry a lot because he couldn't express himself.

And whenever Sebastian was around Max,

He would tell him to just take a breath.

And Max would get all upset and angry about something.

Sometimes the things that Max got angry about were really,

Really small and trivial.

But yet he couldn't help himself.

One time he couldn't open a nut that he found on the jungle floor and he was so mad.

Like ridiculously mad.

The veins were popping up on his neck and he was clenching his fists and his teeth were gnawing and he was shouting at the nut,

Why don't you open?

Why don't you open?

And he kept bashing it with a stone and it still wouldn't open.

Sebastian was with him at the time and he said,

Maybe just take a breath and calm down.

And sometimes that would help Max and then other times Max would get super angry at Sebastian for telling him to calm down,

For telling him to take a breath.

Sometimes Max would turn around and say,

If taking a breath helped,

Don't you think I'd do it?

And Sebastian would say,

I hear you.

I'm listening.

Maybe try and talk to me in a different way.

Maybe try and express how you feel in a different way so I understand why you're so angry.

But don't shout at me.

Sebastian would always say that.

Don't shout at me.

Don't use that voice.

Talk to me in a different voice,

In a calmer voice and I'll be here for you and I'll listen to you.

And for whatever reason,

Max would always stop.

It was like they had this invisible boundary,

A boundary of respect.

Max knew to not shout at Sebastian.

Max knew that Sebastian loved him and he was there for him and he would listen to him,

But he needed to calm down.

And Max would take a breath on his own terms and he'd pause for a minute.

And this would help him to stop the bubbling and boiling blood running through his veins.

He'd just stop.

Sometimes he'd get up and walk away.

And as he walked,

This would help him to calm down.

Sometimes he would get up and shake his hands and his arms as if he was shaking off the angreness,

The energy from inside of himself.

But like I said,

Max really,

Really disliked the fact that he got angry.

He felt like he was losing control.

And in a way he was because sometimes Max could feel the anger bubbling in his body and he could feel it.

His body would get hot and he could feel as if his temperature was changing and he could feel as if there was an angry ball of fire inside of his tummy.

And then it would go up his body and he could feel it bursting out of his chest and bursting through his throat.

And before you know it,

Angry words would come out of his mouth without any control at all.

It was like it was alive inside of him.

The anger was alive inside of Max.

He wished he could pour cold water on it.

He wished he knew something that worked every single time.

Maybe he could be angry for just a few seconds and go,

Rah!

And kind of let it out in a roar.

And then it was out.

It wasn't inside him anymore.

He did that technique quite a lot.

Sebastian taught him to do it,

To just roar,

A big roar out of his mouth as if he was expelling all of the anger and all of the heat and all of the agitation.

As if he was just roaring all of it out of his body.

And then he would take a big deep breath and he would pause and he would feel better.

It didn't work every time.

But it did work a lot of the times.

But what Max really needed to do was figure out why he got angry.

Why was he angry?

One day he was talking to Sebastian about this and Sebastian said,

Maybe it's because of the role that you're in.

Maybe being a leader is something that you don't really want.

Max said that it wasn't something he wanted but he didn't really have any choice.

That a lot of the monkeys were scared of him because he was angry a lot.

Sebastian said that maybe he was angry a lot because he was frightened of something.

Max was taken aback.

He never felt frightened about anything.

Not that he was aware of.

But then when he thought about it,

Sometimes he was frightened of the other monkeys that were leaders.

And when he was angry and he was aggressive all the time,

This felt like he was hiding his fear.

Because when he was angry and loud and he shouted at the other monkeys,

It gave everyone the impression that he was just really hard and really strong and really,

Really tough.

But inside,

Max didn't feel like he was tough.

And he truly,

Truly didn't want to be a scary monkey.

He wanted to be happy and kind.

And he wanted to feel safe enough to just be himself.

Sebastian said,

That's it.

You don't feel safe enough being yourself.

That's probably why you let the anger take a hold of you and you act like that.

But really inside,

You don't want to be angry and you don't want to be so mean.

But you're frightened that the other monkeys might bully you or hurt you or disrespect you.

So you command respect by being so angry all the time.

But it's not respect you're getting,

Max.

It's fear.

Fear from all the other monkeys.

Fear from possibly monkeys that could be your friends.

This really upset Max when he realized what he was doing.

When he realized he was acting so angry all the time so that people would listen to him or pay attention to him.

He thought being angry and mean and aggressive was getting him some kind of respect.

But it wasn't.

He was just creating fear.

He was making the other monkeys just as afraid as he was deep down inside.

Max decided he was going to pay attention to every time he felt himself getting angry and he would definitely do something about it.

From this day forward,

He said to Sebastian,

I'm going to do my deep breathing.

I'm going to walk away.

I'm going to shake the anger off my arms.

I'm going to do something that makes me feel good instead of being angry.

I'm not going to let my anger take over my body.

I am not going to let anger make me lose control anymore.

He did all of the things that he said he was going to do.

Sometimes he found if he just took the biggest,

Biggest,

Deepest breath of all,

One big deep breath,

That paused the anger inside of him.

And if he imagined his breath was bringing cold frosty,

Frosty like freezer cold air into his body,

Then it put out the fire in his belly and it calmed him down.

Sometimes that didn't work.

Sometimes it felt like the anger was so fast at getting a hold of him.

And in those times,

He'd even just stand up and run and sprint if he could,

If the opportunity was there.

Sometimes he'd run really fast up a tree and it felt like the energy that he was using was exerting all of the anger inside of him,

Like he was exercising.

He'd feel his anger coming up and he'd be like,

That's it.

I need to go for a run.

I need to run and climb trees.

I need to swing.

I need to jump.

I need to play.

I need to do something to get this energy out of my body.

And that worked a lot.

Sometimes the one big deep breath would work.

Sometimes he'd just shake it and he'd stand there and shake his whole body.

He'd shake his arms and he'd shake his hands and he'd shake and he'd go,

Whoop,

Whoop,

Whoop,

Whoop,

Whoop,

Whoop,

And make monkey noises.

And that would help him.

Sometimes he'd cough the energy out.

Just a big old cough.

And that made him feel better.

The point is Max found ways to deal with his anger because that was more important to him than being angry at other monkeys anymore.

He just refused to let himself do it.

And he worked on it every day and sometimes he failed and he got angry.

And sometimes it worked and the more he did it,

The more it worked.

The more he did it,

The more he took back control.

And before too long,

Anger wasn't something that Max was known for.

Actually,

Max turned out to be a really cool friend for a lot of monkeys.

Once they weren't frightened of him anymore,

He felt like he was accepted.

He felt like he belonged.

Not from being a leader,

But just from being like everyone else.

And this made him so much more happier.

He liked himself more.

And this helped him to be kinder and nicer to other people because he could be kinder and nicer to himself.

Max was proud of himself instead of being ashamed of himself.

And that made the world of difference.

The end.

This was a phenomenal meditation Cory. The monkey that you mentioned in this meditation is actually from a TV show called Family Guy. Now here’s a question. why did you choose to use a monkey that was in a TV show that gets mad all the time? Chris Griffin actually encountered this mad monkey named Max in an episode of Family Guy. So can you answer my question about this? because I have no idea why you chose to choose a monkey that is mad and his name is Max. Can you please make a meditation about Family Guy, please?
