This meditation was first offered on Insight Timer Live on February 19th.
I was encouraged to record it to share with more people.
So here we go.
Welcome to Where Your Breath Meets the World.
It can feel like we are living inside a storm.
Not always loud,
But constant.
Division hums beneath conversations.
Grief flickers through our news feeds.
A low current of uncertainty runs through daily life.
And even when we try and stay steady,
We absorb what surrounds us.
Your body keeps score,
Tightening in the shoulders or clenching in the jaw.
And your mind runs in circles,
Replaying,
Predicting,
Bracing.
We don't choose to carry all of this.
It gathers quietly inside us,
Simply because we care.
And in times like these,
What steadies us is not more argument or more urgency.
It is compassion.
A softening toward ourselves.
A willingness to remember the humanity in those we love,
And even in those we struggle to understand.
So in this meditation,
We return to something ancient and shared.
Not an idea,
Not a belief,
But rather our breath.
Our collective breath.
The same invisible rhythm running through forests and cities,
Through strangers and friends,
And through you.
Let this shared breath become our meeting place.
And here's the plan for our time together.
First we'll settle into a comfortable space.
Let your breath and my voice guide you throughout the session.
We'll start with connecting to the world around us and offering compassion.
We'll then turn our attention inward,
And often the same compassion to ourselves.
And as we come to a close,
I'll invite you to consider what your intention will be as a result of this experience.
It doesn't have to be big.
A small,
Subtle shift can be impactful.
Let's begin.
Settle into a comfortable seat or recline somewhere that feels supportive and safe.
Allow your eyes to gently close or soften your gaze toward an object nearby.
Rest your hands on your belly,
Connecting to the rhythm that has sustained you since your first breath.
Begin to notice your breath without changing it.
Simply witness the miracle of air flowing in and out of your body.
This same breath that fills your lungs has traveled across oceans,
Through forests,
Over mountains.
You are breathing in the world,
And the world is breathing you.
Take a deep breath in and a full breath out.
As you inhale,
Imagine drawing in a deep indigo light,
The color of twilight,
Of mystery,
Of the vast unknown.
And as you exhale,
Release any heaviness that you've been carrying that isn't yours to hold.
Breathe in and breathe out.
Now expand your awareness beyond your own body.
Imagine that you can sense every other person on this planet who,
In this very moment,
Is also breathing.
Some are sleeping.
Some are waking.
Some are laughing.
Some are crying.
All are breathing.
You are part of an invisible web of breath connecting every living being on Earth.
Take a deep breath in and a full exhale out.
Feel your chest rise as you breathe in and your belly soften.
Feel the weight of your body supported by the Earth beneath you.
This same Earth holds all of us across every border,
Beyond every division.
We are held by the same ground,
Warmed by the same sun,
And governed by the same moon.
Breathe in and gently say to yourself,
I am here.
And gently breathe out and say to yourself,
We are here together.
I am here.
We are here together.
Now bring to mind someone you love deeply.
See their face.
Feel the warmth of your care for them.
Notice how this feeling of love exists right now in your chest,
In your body.
Love is not abstract.
It's tangible.
It's real.
It's embodied.
Take a gentle breath in and a gentle breath out.
Now expand this feeling of love outward like ripples on water.
Extend it to your neighbors,
To the strangers you pass on the street,
To those whose names you'll never know but whose lives intersect with yours in countless invisible ways.
And silently offer these words.
May you feel steady in a world that moves too fast.
May calm rise within you even when everything around you feels chaotic.
May you stay rooted in your inner wisdom.
And may you remember you belong here.
You are connected.
And your presence matters.
Take a deep breath in and a full,
Releasing breath out.
Now include those you find difficult.
Those whose views clash with yours.
Those who trigger your defenses.
They too are breathing this same air,
Seeking safety,
Wanting to be loved.
You don't have to agree with them to recognize their humanity.
And silently offer these words to them.
May you feel steady in a world that moves too fast.
May calm rise within you even when everything around you feels chaotic.
May you stay rooted in your inner wisdom.
And may you remember you belong here.
You are connected.
And your presence matters.
Finally,
We'll turn this compassion inward.
Gently place your hands on your heart as I offer these words of compassion to you.
May you feel steady in a world that moves too fast.
May calm rise within you even when everything around you feels chaotic.
May you stay rooted in your inner wisdom.
And may you remember you belong here.
You are connected.
And your presence matters.
Leave your hands over your heart if that's comfortable.
Or return them back to your belly.
Feel the rhythm of your breath.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
What the world needs most cannot be manufactured or legislated.
It cannot be bought or sold.
What the world needs most is already here.
It exists in the space between your thoughts.
In the gap between your breaths.
It is presence.
It is awareness.
It is the radical act of being fully here,
Now,
Awake to this moment.
Presence brings us back together when we feel scattered or disconnected.
It helps us remember who we are and eases much of the suffering that comes from feeling lost or divided.
Now let your attention rest softly in your body.
Feel the natural rhythm of your breathing.
The quiet rise and the gentle fall.
With each breath,
Let it be an act of kindness towards yourself.
Inhale.
I welcome myself back.
Exhale.
I am safe here.
Inhale.
Even in my perfection.
And exhale.
I am still worthy of belonging.
Let your breath hold you.
Let it reassure you.
As you prepare to move back into your world,
Imagine that this time you've spent here has gently shifted something within you,
Transforming the heaviness of anxiety into steadiness or the weight of despair into a quiet thread of hope.
Now it's time to set an intention.
How will you bring this presence,
This compassion,
This connection into your daily life?
Maybe it's a kind word to a stranger.
Maybe it's listening to someone you'd rather have indifference for.
Maybe it's simply pausing to react before react and taking one conscious breath before responding to the chaos.
Small acts of consciousness ripple outward in ways we cannot measure.
Bring back your awareness to your hands on your body.
Feel your heartbeat.
Know that what you've cultivated here,
This presence,
This compassion,
This remembering of our interconnection,
Is the medicine the world is asking for.
Not tomorrow.
Not when circumstances change.
But right now.
You are the change.
You are the healing.
You are the light.
Wiggle your fingers and toes.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
And remember,
Your small conscious choice might be the ripple someone else didn't know they were waiting for.
Namaste.
