Welcome to this indigo alchemy meditation called Drift Off to Sleep using the cognitive shuffle technique for restful sleep by creating a space where your mind is allowed to rest.
If you're listening to this your body may be tired but your thoughts are still awake.
You might be trying to get to sleep or have woken up from sleep feeling restless tossing and turning.
Tonight we won't try to solve anything.
We won't analyze.
We won't fix.
We're simply going to gently confuse the thinking mind so the deeper wiser part of you can drift back to sleep.
But before we begin a few words about this practice.
Cognitive shuffle is a gentle technique designed to help the mind let go of problem-solving and fall asleep or return to sleep.
Instead of following thoughts or worries you'll be guided through a series of simple unrelated images.
There is no story to follow and nothing to analyze.
This list of light random imagery gives the thinking mind something neutral to focus on.
By allowing your nervous system to soften and the body to do what it already knows how to do,
Rest.
Trust this truth of inner wisdom that sleep comes more easily when effort steps aside and the mind is given permission to wander without direction.
You don't need to do this perfectly.
Just listen,
Imagine,
And let yourself drift.
Let's begin.
Let your eyes gently close.
Feel the place where your body meets the bed or couch or wherever you are lying down.
Settle into a warm,
Comfortable,
Relaxed presence.
Gently bring your awareness to your breath.
No need to change it.
Just notice it.
Slow,
Natural,
Rhythmic,
Breathing in and breathing out,
In and out,
In and out.
Before we start the imagery,
Know that you don't need to keep up with every single image I offer.
Your only job is to follow the sound of my voice,
Letting each word arrive,
Then drift away.
And if your mind wanders,
That's okay.
Simply come back to the next image or to the tone and rhythm of my voice.
Trust that rest doesn't come from effort,
But from allowing yourself to be guided one simple moment at a time.
So let my voice lead and let your mind soften into sleep.
Now we'll begin the shuffle.
I'll offer simple,
Unrelated images.
There is no story,
No meaning,
Nothing to remember.
Just let each image appear and fade like clouds passing through a night sky.
Imagine a yellow umbrella,
A blue teacup,
A bicycle leaning against a fence,
A soft green pillow,
A mailbox with no inside,
A silver spoon,
A window with raindrops on it,
A quiet library shelf,
A candle with a flame burning bright,
A white feather,
A wooden staircase,
A paper boat floating on water,
A clear glass jar,
A soft blue scarf,
A lighthouse in the distance,
A warm cup of soup,
A closed door,
A pair of shoes by the bed.
If your mind starts to comment,
That's okay.
Just return to the next image.
A green leaf,
A clock with no hands,
A folded blanket,
A blue stone,
A tiny bell,
A field of tall grass,
A key on a table,
A simple chair,
A bowl of rice,
A cloud shaped like nothing in particular,
A lantern,
A smooth shell,
A quiet road,
A bowl of cherries,
A notebook with blank pages,
A warm mug,
A stack of towels,
A hat on a hook,
A white curtain moving gently through the breeze,
A pine cone,
A glass of water,
A small boat tied to a dock.
Let the images be soft.
Blurry is fine.
Even vague is perfect.
Your mind is learning that it doesn't need to work right now.
Nothing to figure out.
Nothing to prepare for.
If your mind drifts,
Let it drift.
You are not behind.
You are not failing.
You are practicing the art of not trying,
And that is wisdom.
Trust your body's knowing.
Trust your nervous system's rhythm.
Trust the rest you find when effort steps aside.
We'll continue with these images,
Or you can just let them fade away.
A doorway,
A pebble,
A feather,
A cup,
A window,
A bowl,
A leaf,
A chair.
There's nothing else you need to do.
Sleep is welcome now.
Rest is safe now.
You are held by the dark and guided by your inner wisdom.
Sweet dreams.
