There are times in history when the world feels unsettled.
We hear of war,
Suffering and division.
The heart can begin to feel heavy with the weight of it all.
In Celtic spirituality,
When life becomes turbulent we return to the deep wisdom of the natural world.
The land teaches patience,
The rivers teach resilience,
The ancient stones teach endurance.
Take a moment now to settle.
If it feels comfortable,
Gently close the eyes.
Allow the shoulders to soften.
Let the body rest.
Take a slow breath in through the nose and gently releasing through the mouth.
Again,
Breathing in and breathing out.
Letting the rhythm of your own breath now become steady and calm.
Imagine yourself standing in a quiet place in nature.
Perhaps beside the sea or maybe on open land beneath a wide sky or among ancient trees whose roots run deep in the soil.
Feel the earth beneath your feet.
This same earth has carried generations before you through times of peace and times of hardship.
Storms have passed across this land before.
Yet the land endures.
The rivers continue to flow.
The wind continues to move across the hills.
Let yourself feel supported now by this ancient ground.
With each breath,
Allow the steadiness of the earth to steady you.
Imagine now that you are standing beside an ancient oak tree.
Its roots reach deep into the earth.
Its branches stretch toward the sky.
This tree has witnessed centuries.
It has endured storms,
Strong winds and changing seasons.
Yet it remains rooted.
Feel that same quiet strength now within yourself.
You too are part of this ancient and living world.
Take a breath and feel the resilience that lives within you.
Now bring your awareness gently to the heart.
Perhaps placing a hand over the chest.
Noticing heart.
Maybe feeling sensations of warmth in the heart area.
Or perhaps even becoming aware of the heartbeat itself.
Noticing now whatever feelings are present in this moment in your heart.
There may be sadness for those in the world who are suffering.
Concern for the future.
Or simply a longing for peace.
Allow whatever feelings are here now to be held in kindness.
The Celtic tradition reminds us that the heart is a sacred meeting place between heaven and earth.
Take a slow breath in now,
Right into the heart.
And a gentle,
Slow breath out.
Silently offer these words.
May my heart remain open.
May compassion guide my thoughts.
May I bring peace wherever I can.
May my heart remain open.
May compassion guide my thoughts.
May I bring peace wherever I can.
Now imagine the earth held in a wide circle of light.
Within this circle are forests,
Oceans,
Mountains and rivers.
Cities and villages.
Families and communities.
Children sleeping.
Parents hoping for safety.
People longing for peace.
Allow your heart to widen gently.
As together we offer this simple blessing.
May those living in fear find protection.
May those who are grieving find comfort.
May wisdom guide the leaders of our world.
May peace grow where there is conflict.
Now including the living earth in our prayer.
Inviting you to offer these words with me.
May the earth be healed.
May her waters run clear.
May her forests stand tall and strong.
May all beings live in harmony.
Resting here now for a few quiet breaths.
As this meditation comes to a close,
Let these words settle softly in your heart.
May the earth beneath you be steady.
May the breath within you be calm.
May the hearth of peace burn gently in your heart.
And may the compassion you cultivate here flow outward to all who suffer and to this living earth that holds us all.
Take one final slow breath in.
And lovely long releasing breath out.
When you are ready then,
Gently open your eyes.
Carrying this quiet peace within you now into the rest of your day.
Thank you.
