So often nervous system education talks about the body.
The sensations,
The fight or flight symptoms we can feel firsthand.
But here's something most people don't realise.
Your nervous system doesn't just shape how you feel in your body,
It also shapes your thoughts.
The actual content of what your mind tells you.
Moment to moment.
And once you understand this,
Everything changes.
By the end of this talk,
You'll be able to spot when a difficult thought is actually a nervous system state in disguise,
And know exactly what to do about it.
Which is to pause and then regulate.
Often we assume our thoughts are simply the truth,
Or that the way we talk to ourselves is just our personality.
But very often what we call personality is actually state,
A nervous system state.
The thoughts that arise when you're calm,
Connected and regulated can be completely different to the thoughts that arise when you're anxious,
Overwhelmed or shut down.
Let's take an example.
You have a really busy week ahead.
When you're regulated,
You might think,
I've got a lot on,
But I'll take it one step at a time.
I have what it takes to get through this.
In hyper-arousal,
The mobilised energy,
The thought might whisper,
I've got so much on,
I can't handle this.
I need to get it exactly right.
Everything is just too much.
In hypoarousal or immobilization.
The thoughts might whisper.
This week is destined to be stressful.
I'm just too tired to get through it.
Why does this always happen to me?
I may as well just give in to the fact that it's going to be horrible.
And often in these moments,
We don't just experience the first layer of difficult thoughts.
We add a second layer too.
Judgment,
Shame,
Self-attack.
Why am I like this?
I should be coping better.
What's wrong with me?
And here's what I want you to know.
None of these thoughts mean you aren't enough.
Or that there's something wrong with your personality.
They mean your system is under strain.
This is where the hope comes in.
Because once we understand that these inner narratives are shaped by state,
We stop treating every thought as concrete truth.
From here,
The invitation is simple.
Next time you catch yourself deep in a thought spiral,
Pause and regulate before you believe a word of it.
Find your way back to the wiser,
Steadier part of yourself first.
And you might be surprised how much the thought itself changes,
Too.
