You sit quietly and observe the ongoing stream of thoughts, sensations, and emotions with openness and curiosity. When attention drifts, you notice the wandering and gently return, often silently noting thoughts as passing mental events rather than fixing on a single object. In Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), this is carried through guided sits and breath and body awareness.
Mindful awareness is broader and more receptive than focused-attention meditation, which anchors on one object such as the breath, and it differs from choiceless awareness by keeping an intentional monitoring of experience.
