Outcome evidence, though, comes from gut-targeted treatments rather than this practice. A meta-analysis of 23 trials in 1,401 people with diagnosed depression or anxiety found probiotics produced a large reduction in depression symptoms versus placebo, a standardized effect size of -0.96 (95% CI -1.31, -0.61), meaning the average treated person scored lower than roughly four in five placebo participants, while a broader review across 54 trials found mostly no clear mood benefit (Afrida et al., 2025), (Charlotte et al., 2022). The main limit is directness: no trial has tested the heart-gut meditation itself, so its benefits are extrapolated from diet and microbe studies rather than measured (Mayer et al., 2015).
