Welcome if you've woken during the night and you cannot seem to settle back into sleep.
This meditation is here to gently guide you back toward rest.
There is nothing wrong with you for being awake right now.
Many people wake during the night from time to time.
And often the hardest part is not the waking itself.
But the tension that follows.
The frustration,
The checking of the clock.
The fear about tomorrow.
So before anything else take a slow easy breath in.
And exhale gently.
Allowing the body to soften.
And again,
Breathing in calm.
Breathing out pressure.
Tonight there is no need to fight wakefulness.
No need to force sleep to happen.
Instead,
We begin by allowing this moment exactly as it is.
You are here.
Breathing.
Resting.
Safe in your bed.
And as you continue listening.
See if you can allow your body to become heavier.
Your legs relaxing deeply.
Your hips softening.
Your stomach unclenching.
Your chest loosening.
Your shoulders dropping away from the ears.
The arms becoming warm and loose.
The jaw soft.
The eyes resting heavily.
Now imagine a wave of calm moving slowly through the body.
If it helps,
You can picture it as a soft wave of colour.
Beginning at the top of the head.
Flowing down across the forehead.
Smoothing away mental tension.
Down around the eyes.
Softening all the tiny muscles that have been working too hard.
Down through the cheeks.
The mouth.
The neck.
The shoulders.
That wave continues slowly downward.
Through the arms.
The hands.
The fingertips.
And now into the chest.
The upper back.
The stomach.
Softening and loosening everything it touches.
Down through the hips.
The thighs.
The knees.
The calves.
The feet.
Until the whole body feels deeply supported.
Heavy.
Still.
Quiet.
And now notice the rhythm of your breathing once more.
Not trying to control it.
Simply feeling it.
The body breathing itself.
The body resting itself.
The body slowly returning towards sleep in its own time.
And if thoughts arise,
You do not need to follow them.
Imagine each thought floating across a dark night sky,
Like a cloud passing the moon.
No need to hold on to it.
No need to solve it.
Just letting it drift away again.
The night is not asking you to think.
The night is asking you to rest.
And even now,
Your nervous system may already be settling.
Your heartbeat slowing.
Your mind becoming quieter.
Your body remembering the path back to sleep.
You may notice moments where you almost drift away.
Then return again.
That is natural.
That is part of falling asleep.
Nothing to force.
Nothing to monitor.
Just drifting closer and closer to sleep.
Now imagine yourself wrapped in warmth and darkness.
Completely supported.
Completely safe.
Held gently by the bed beneath you.
Held gently by the quiet of the night.
And with every breath out,
Letting go a little more.
And a little more.
And a little more.
Now imagine you were walking slowly through a peaceful night time garden.
The air cool against your skin.
Everything's silent.
Everything still.
Moonlight resting softly on the path ahead.
And with each step,
Your thoughts become quieter.
Slower.
Less important.
The deeper you move into this peaceful place.
The more relaxed your body becomes.
You pass tall trees moving gently in the night breeze.
You hear distant water flowing softly somewhere nearby.
And every sound seems to guide you deeper into calm.
Deeper into rest.
There is nowhere to reach.
Nothing to achieve.
Only this peaceful wandering.
Only this quiet moment.
And now perhaps you come to a comfortable place to rest.
A soft chair.
A hammock.
A sheltered place beneath the stars.
And as you settle there,
The body relaxes even more deeply.
The muscles loosening.
The breathing slowing.
The mind becoming hazy and distant.
As though sleep is slowly drawing closer around you.
You no longer need to follow every thought.
We no longer need to stay alert.
The night itself is holding you.
Supporting you.
Keeping you safe while you rest.
And perhaps now you can begin imagining yourself floating gently on calm water.
Effortless.
Weightless.
Held completely.
The water carrying you without effort.
No striving.
No tension.
No urgency.
Only floating.
Only drifting.
Only rest.
And each breath out carries you farther from wakefulness,
Farther from thinking.
Bother from tension.
Closer to sleep.
Closer to dreaming.
Closer to deep rest.
And now I'll speak less and less,
Allowing you to drift more deeply into rest.
Drifting now.
Is here.
Quiet mind.
Safe.
Nothing to do.
Sleep is returning.
Resting deeply.
Letting go.
Floating softly into sleep.
Calm and still.
Supported by the night.
Everything can wait.
Breathing softly.
Deeper and deeper into rest.
