Hello,
I am Gabriela and welcome to this talk on calming financial stress,
Finding stability in uncertain times.
Welcome,
Today we're speaking about something many people carry quietly,
Financial stress.
I spent much of 2020 and parts of 2021 in a state of anxiety and PTSD over financial stress.
And coming out the other side of that period,
I learned a lot about the nervous system and how much of the information about meditation that was out there was actually very misleading.
What I found was that traditional meditation practices,
Where you sit down maybe in lotus pose and aim to achieve states of silence or clear thoughts,
A lot of those meditation practices would previously help me calm the mind.
But in this case,
At this period of my life,
It often made me feel a lot worse.
And through trial and error,
I discovered that actually a dysregulated nervous system doesn't always benefit from stillness.
What it needs is movement and breath to help release the charge of energy that is built up from worry and stress.
A lot of the time when I actually meditated or attempted to,
I felt much,
Much worse.
And money anxiety can be one of the most activating forms of stress because it connects directly to survival.
It's very root chakra based.
It's all about safety,
Survival,
Security,
And actually abundance.
And so that those kind of primal Maslow hierarchy of needs that the food,
The shelter,
Security,
Stability,
When finances feel uncertain,
It doesn't just stay in the mind,
It moves into the body.
It's a physical sensation.
If you're experiencing this yourself at this time of listening to this recording,
You might notice if you tune into the body for a moment,
If that's safe for you to do so,
A tightness in your chest or perhaps a knot in your stomach,
Racing thoughts at night,
Or when you're in moments of silence,
Silence can feel really uncomfortable because of that,
A constant background hum of worry.
And what's important to understand is this,
Financial stress is not a personal failure.
It is a nervous system response.
When resources feel uncertain,
The body can shift into fight,
Flight,
Or freeze.
We may overwork,
Avoid looking at our bank account,
Catastrophize about the future,
Or really feel paralyzed.
Before trying to fix the situation externally,
It helps to stabilize internally.
Because decisions made from panic often create more panic,
Decisions made from steadiness create options.
There were moments in my panic that I've made some reckless financial decisions,
Which actually led to me losing money via financial scams and things.
And it was because I was so dysregulated and feeling this anxiety very physically in my body that it led me to make those irrational and very ungrounded decisions.
And there's no judgment here at all,
If you have experienced the same.
Right now,
If it feels okay,
Take one slow breath in through your nose with me,
And a slow breath out.
Financial stress often shrinks our perception.
It tells us everything is urgent,
Everything is collapsing,
Everything is permanent.
But anxiety is a storyteller,
Not always a truth teller.
One helpful reframe is this,
I'm experiencing financial stress right now,
Is different from my life is unsafe and falling apart.
That small shift creates space.
Another gentle practice is separating facts from fears.
Facts are concrete,
They are truth,
A number,
A deadline,
A bill.
Fear fills in the gaps with imagined futures.
When we bring clarity to what is real and what is imagined,
We begin to reclaim agency.
Financial challenges are deeply human.
Most people at some point navigate seasons of contraction,
Job changes,
Unexpected expenses,
Transitions,
Global pandemics.
It's not a reflection of your worth.
It's not a measure of your intelligence.
It's not proof either that you have failed.
Money touches identity in powerful ways,
Especially if you've internalized beliefs about success,
Independence,
Or security.
So if shame is present,
Meet it gently.
Instead of,
I should have done better,
Try,
I'm learning how to navigate this season.
Because that's what this is.
It's a season.
And seasons change.
Practical action matters,
Of course.
Planning,
Support,
Conversations,
Restructuring.
These are important.
But sustainable action begins from regulation,
Not self-attack.
So today,
Perhaps the only step is this.
Breathe.
Name what is real.
Release what is imagined.
And remember that your worth is not tied to your bank balance.
You are allowed to feel scared.
You are allowed to ask for support.
And you are capable of navigating uncertainty,
Even if you don't know how.
Financial stress can feel isolating.
But you are not alone in this experience.
And steadiness begins one regulated breath at a time.
Thank you for listening.
