Unfortunately for me it's not just the beauty industry but rather a collective effort of our society telling men what beauty looks like (and that puts stress on us thinking we're not pretty enough or deserving of love because of thinning hair, wrinkles, age spots, mid-life weight gain), being bombarded with images of "beautiful women" who are in their early 20s, and in my case, being raised by a Latina mom (you're too thin, too fat) where pressure is often at it's highest simply because you want to make your parents happy. I'm 47 and while I'm not the 125 pounds I weighed in the military (I'm 230 pounds now thanks to the stress of a 19-year teaching career), and although my health is full of stress-related chronic ailments, I appreciate the fact that I truly know what I want not just in life but in a partner. And that turned out to be that I don't want a partner lol. Seeking validation from men is tiring, unfulfilling, and unnecessary. I finally live by what my mom used to tell me since I was 15 and only now deeply appreciate "mejor sola que mal acompañada" (better to be alone than in bad company).
