In this meditation you get an opportunity to pick an emotion and explore how it feels in your body.
So often we think our emotions are trapped in our mind because of the stories we tell,
But they live in our body too.
And if we can start to understand where they live in the body and allow those sensations to exist for as short as 90 seconds,
We can move through those emotions rather than repressing or suppressing them,
As we so commonly do these days.
I hope you enjoy.
Make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the next five minutes or so.
Get yourself comfortable,
Sat down,
Lying down,
Whatever feels most safe for your body right now.
And when you're ready,
Close your eyes.
To become present,
We're going to connect with the breath.
So I want you to take a deep breath in.
And let it go with a sigh.
Take another deep breath in.
Really feel your stomach expand as you fill up your lungs.
And let it go.
Take a final deep breath in.
Becoming aware of this moment and nothing else.
And letting it go.
Let your body settle.
Feel the weight of gravity.
Feel the weight of gravity.
And become present for now.
Just watch as your breath returns to normal,
Flowing in and out without any guidance.
From this place of presence and neutrality,
I want you to pick one emotion.
It could be love,
Excitement,
Fear,
Joy.
And when you've chosen that emotion,
I want you to embody it.
But instead of coming up with stories in your mind,
I want you to experience it in your body.
Scan up and down your body.
Do you feel this emotion in your toes,
Feet,
Ankles,
Lower legs,
Upper legs?
Is there any movement,
Any sensations,
Any heat,
Any coolness?
What about in your abdomen,
Hips,
Back,
Chest and shoulders?
Any contraction,
Any expansion,
Any sensations or movement?
What about through your arms or your neck and face?
Is there anything that this emotion brings to those spaces in your body?
Just allow yourself to scan up and down and describe how that emotion fits into your body.
There's no right or wrong.
It's different for everyone.
Just explore and find out what that emotion feels like for you in this safe environment.
Fantastic.
Now I want you just to come back,
Let that emotion dissipate by focusing once again on your breath.
Extend the inhales and the exhales just to make sure you're breathing deeply.
Now start to wiggle your fingers and toes.
Shift about in whatever way feels nice.
And when you're ready,
Open your eyes.
I would highly recommend grabbing a journal or a pen and paper and capturing which emotion you chose and how it felt in your body,
Where it felt in the body,
What colours it had,
What movement it needed.
And don't forget,
You can come back to this meditation at any time to explore a whole range of our human emotions.
