5–5 Breathing For Heart–Breath Coherence & Calm
by Reuben Lowe
This practice guides you into a simple 5–5 breathing rhythm—five seconds in, five seconds out—helping the body settle into a natural state of heart and lung coherence. At this pace, the breath aligns with the cardiovascular system, averaging around 5.5 breaths per minute, which is known to support nervous system regulation and emotional balance. As the breath becomes smooth and even, the heart rhythm begins to stabilise, sending calming signals throughout the body. This can help reduce anxiety, quiet the mind, and bring a sense of grounded clarity without needing to force relaxation. You may notice a gentle shift from tension to steadiness, from mental noise to a more settled awareness. This is the body doing what it’s designed to do when given the right conditions. Helpful for stress, anxious thoughts, emotional overwhelm, or as a daily reset to reconnect with a calm, regulated state.
