Take a moment and let your attention turn inward.
Maybe this is through closing your eyes,
Or maybe this is just an intention that arises from some place within that allows for some slowness,
Some ease,
Some moving from the external that is all around us,
To turning our attention to that inner well,
That inner well of awareness,
Our inner community.
And as you do that,
See if you can allow yourself to settle in such a way that you'll be able to set your mind up to engage in a visualization.
Perhaps this means adjusting yourself in some way,
In some posture,
Or maybe there's just an intention of going with the breath,
Of just feeling that,
What that experience is.
Whatever it is that allows you to come into a place where your system is able to visualize or experience in some way a pair of eyes looking at you.
We often have the experience of eyes looking at us,
Whether we're aware of it or not,
Throughout our day,
Week,
Months,
Or even years.
And each eye can have a different flavor to them.
The eyes that we encounter in the mailman might be different than the eyes of a close friend.
We might notice the angry eyes of someone that cuts us off,
Or the sad eyes of someone feeling defeated on that day.
Now,
Eyes actually hold a lot of information that is registered in our nervous system,
And we know we might not pick up on that consciously,
Or even put words to this as we move through the world and notice the ways that eyes influence us.
And now,
With this in mind,
I want you to consider visualizing a pair of eyes that are communicating love for you in some way.
Maybe these eyes are seen as being soft on the sides of them with the muscles relaxed,
Or maybe the retina is a certain color that is somehow perceived by you to be piercing or engaging in some way.
Whatever it is,
Take a moment and really see if you can relax into the visualization of a pair of loving eyes looking at you.
This might be difficult at first,
Either in visualizing them or feeling they're abstract in some way,
But continue with it,
Noticing how your nervous system engages with a pair of eyes that are looking at you that communicate love to you in some non-verbal way.
And take a moment if you can really notice how this look of love is impacting your body.
Maybe it's loosening your body,
Inviting your shoulders to go down,
Or your inhales and exhales to become longer,
All on their own.
Or maybe you're noticing that as you visualize these eyes there's a desire for more distance from them,
And that's okay.
Allowing yourself to continue to adjust this visualization in your imagination so that it is just right for you.
Taking time to really let really let your parasympathetic nervous system engage,
Feeling that peace,
That settling,
As these eyes look with no threat,
No agenda,
No need to move you,
But are just piercing in their love for you.
You might notice stories come up as you look at these eyes,
And maybe they're the thought of eyes like that can't possibly exist,
Or they're the sensation of wanting to turn away,
Or find more distance from these eyes,
And that's okay.
See if you can let these reactions be,
As these eyes are unmoved and unthreatened by your response.
Maybe you notice that these eyes belong to a certain person,
Or maybe they're constantly changing.
Continuing to notice what is happening in your body as these eyes display so many of the characteristics of what we think of when we think of secure attachment,
Unchanging,
Willing to engage,
Receptive to your experience,
Among other qualities.
Noticing that as we visualize and work in a deeper way with these eyes,
We might actually be,
Through our imagination,
Helping our nervous system transform.
Continuing to notice what it's like as we go deeper with these eyes,
Feeling held and nurtured in a way that does not need to maintain any sort of intensity,
Simply invites us to drop in further.
You might even,
Through the course of this meditation,
Have the desire to bring one of your hands up to your chest,
Over your heart,
Feeling how your heart is beating as you're perceiving these eyes looking at you.
And now seeing if there's a way that you can actually take these eyes in.
Take in these wise and vulnerable eyes that have no threat to you,
That simply perceive you and want to hold you and care and offer warmth to you.
Continue to engage in this process of your imagination because with your imagination you can make it just right for you.
You can keep changing it until it's just right for you.
And maybe you can notice,
Even through the course of this meditation,
That something has softened inside of you.
As humans are internalization machines,
Maybe there's an experience of being able to internalize these eyes on a deeper level.
Maybe there's even a way of carrying these eyes with you when you leave this meditation.
There can even be an invitation over the next 24 hours to just notice the continual impact of this meditation on your nervous system,
Acknowledging these eyes,
Their care for you,
And allowing yourself to slowly begin to move out of your internal world.
Maybe that's not just flinging your eyes open right away.
Maybe that's a simple adjusting of your posture,
Or perhaps it's allowing your eyes to flicker open and closed,
Not just running away or transitioning immediately out of our internal experience,
But engaging with our nervous system in a way that gently brings this experience into the rest of our day.
Thanks for engaging with me in this practice today.
