We all smile when we're happy.
But did you know that smiling helps us to become happier?
Many studies have shown that smiling releases naturally occurring chemicals in the form of endorphins,
Dopamine and serotonin.
And these trigger a positive feeling,
Elevating your mood and making you feel more relaxed.
So let's do a short meditation on that now.
Find a comfortable position and softly close your eyes.
Take a deep breath in through your nose.
And back through your nose,
Exhale slowly.
Now bring your attention to your face.
Relax your forehead,
Your cheeks and your jaw.
Gently allow the corners of your lips to lift into a soft smile.
It doesn't have to be big,
Just enough to feel.
Hold that smile and notice any subtle shifts that the smile brings.
Sensing to see if there is even the gentlest emergence of joy.
Feel how it spreads warmth through your face and allow that to move down into your chest,
Into your heart centre and whilst still smiling at the mouth.
Imagine smiling in the heart too,
A lifting feeling.
As you breathe in,
Imagine joy and light filling your body.
As you breathe out,
Release any tension or heaviness.
Allow this smile to grow,
Even if just a little.
Feel its energy touching every part of you,
Bringing light and ease.
If your mind wanders,
Gently return it to the sensation of the smile and allowing that to spread through the body.
A sense of warmth,
Love and joy.
And we'll close this meditation,
So take in one final deep inhale and as you do,
Feel the joy spreading all around your body.
And a long,
Soft exhale,
Letting it settle into your heart.
When you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
Carry this gentle smile and its warmth with you as you go about your day.
