We're going to have a trust fall with our writing. Using the breath as our safety net, this meditation explores taking creative leaps and trusting ourselves, our creativity, and our processes to catch us. Here, we learn to be comfortable with the uncertainty of the creative act. We leap. The net appears.

We'll begin today's practice by finding a comfortable seat.

And when you're ready,

Gently closing your eyes.

Take a moment to note any tension that you're feeling in your body.

You can send a nice deep inhale and exhale into that space.

Releasing any tension that you're feeling.

Go ahead and do that three times.

Locating tension.

Inhale the tension.

And exhale.

Today we'll be taking a trust fall.

Using the breath as the safety net that will catch us.

Every inhale is a creative leap into the unknown.

And every exhale is you catching yourself.

Writing requires that we become comfortable with uncertainty.

But just as we trust an inhale will always follow an exhale,

We can trust our processes to catch us as we fall into the unknown of our work.

The breath will be our object of meditation.

And when I ring the bell,

Let that guide you into curious exploration of your breath.

Breathing naturally in through the nose and out through the nose.

Your breath is a safety net that you can always depend on in this lifetime.

Use that as an anchor of trust that you can hold onto during times of creative uncertainty.

We're trust falling into our inner wisdom.

Into our flow,

Into our process.

We're showing up and we're trusting that our creativity will show up when we do.

So as you explore your breath,

Notice how it moves through your body.

You might note the temperature.

Is it warm or cool as it moves into your nose?

Do you feel your breath most in your heart center?

Perhaps in your belly?

Or is there somewhere else in your body that your breath expresses itself most prominently?

Trusting the breath will be there in the silence.

Trusting the breath will be there in the darkness.

Each inhale is a fall into the unknown.

Each exhale is being caught by sure hands.

Thoughts may arise just as distractions arise when we are trying to find our flow.

It's okay,

That's normal.

The mind thinks that's its job.

But you'll trust your intention to focus on your breath.

Guiding yourself back gently to your breath.

Each inhale and exhale.

Realizing that your breath will show up for you and you'll show up for your breath.

Leaping.

Falling.

Being caught.

Inhale,

Leaping.

Inhale,

Falling and being caught.

You trust this.

You trust yourself.

You trust your body.

You don't even have to think about it.

It's natural.

Inhale,

Exhale.

In the silence,

Uncertainty may have arisen.

You may have felt the need to open your eyes and check the recording.

What would it feel like to rest in that uncertainty?

You don't know when I will speak next.

This is you don't know exactly how your creativity will show up.

But you know that it will.

Trust yourself to hold your seat in the silence.

To let the breath be the safety net.

To stay with yourself,

To trust yourself.

Your breathing,

The simplest thing.

Breathing in and out.

Breathing out.

Allow your breath to carry you to the shore of yourself.

And as we prepare to close,

Set an intention.

How will you trust yourself as a writer today?

Allow the bell to guide you into opening your eyes.

Remember all you need to do is breathe,

Write,

And repeat.

That was so helpful and I’ll keep returning to it because I hope/believe it will keep helping, guiding me to trust myself. So good to have those spells of silence, giving them time to cast their spell, reminding us that when faced with a blank page or screen, it’s trust we need most. Not frantic thought or despairing pencil chewing, but trust… that our creativity will meet us there. “…read, write and repeat…” Thank you.
