Write, Then Burn: A Course To Release What’s Heavy Through Journaling & Fire

With Kathryn Vandertulip

This is Write, Then Burn—a 7-day ritual journaling course for releasing what’s heavy, held, or hidden. Each day, you’ll be guided through a short insight, a somatic breath practice, a powerful spoken invocation, and a five-minute journaling prompt designed to surface what’s ready to be released. Then, if it feels safe and aligned—you’ll burn the page. This is not about perfection. It’s not about being “good” at journaling. It’s about turning to the flame as a sacred tool for clarity, courage, and letting go. Expect to explore themes like: • Mental loops and emotional static • Inherited energy and old roles • Repressed emotion and unspoken anger • Identity, grief, and rebirth through release If you’re holding things that no longer serve you—and you’re ready to write, feel, and burn your way into something new—this is for you.

Lesson 1

The Static

This Day 1 session introduces "The Static"—that buzzing, looping mental noise that clutters our inner space and makes it hard to be still. Through a blend of somatic breathwork, reflective writing, and intentional release, students learn to name and clear surface-level stress, creating the spaciousness needed for deeper self-connection. With Clarissa Dalloway as a literary mirror for our overfilled minds, this lesson invites you to let go—not by force, but by flame. ASMR: Matchstick Strike & A Burning Candle (5 minutes)

Lesson 2

The Inherited

This Day 2 session explores the energy we inherit but never asked for—emotional patterns, family pain, and ancestral burdens that took root in our bodies without consent. Inspired by the haunting legacy carried by Sethe in Beloved, we gently name what was passed down and absorb the truth: survival doesn’t mean we have to carry everything. Through breath, reflection, and ritual release, we begin to lay down what was never truly ours to hold. ASMR: Matchstick Strike & A Burning Candle (5 minutes)

Lesson 3

The Script

This Day 3 session focuses on “The Script”—the internalized beliefs, roles, and identities that were handed to us long before we had the words to question them. Through a ritual of breath, reclamation, and burning, students are guided to confront the labels they’ve been performing and rewrite them in their own voice. With Jane Eyre as our literary mirror, we explore what it means to choose truth over obedience and author a life aligned with who we actually are—not just who we were told to be. Lesson 4

The Ache

This Day 4 session brings us into “The Ache”—the soft griefs, quiet longings, and tender nostalgias that often go unspoken but never truly disappear. Inspired by The Little Prince’s poetic sadness, this lesson invites students to sit gently with their own unexpressed sorrows—not to fix or analyze, but to witness. Through breath, reflection, and ritual release, you’ll make space for the kind of ache that hums in the background, so it can be heard… and honored. Lesson 5

The Mask

This Day 5 session explores The Mask—the version of ourselves we perform to stay safe, likable, or in control. With Jay Gatsby as a literary mirror, we reflect on the personas we’ve curated and the cost of maintaining them. Through breathwork and raw, revealing writing, students gently lay down the mask—not to destroy it, but to reclaim what it’s been hiding: truth, tenderness, and the self that existed before performance. Lesson 6

The Firekeeper

This Day 6 session confronts The Firekeeper—the hidden ember of anger, resentment, and unspoken truth that’s been quietly burning beneath the surface. With Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights as our literary mirror, we explore the cost of swallowed fury and the toll of chronic self-silencing. Through grounding breathwork, raw journaling, and a fierce ritual of release, students are invited to give voice to what was never allowed to be expressed—and finally let it go. This is not about chaos. It’s about liberation. ASMR: Raging Bonfire

Lesson 7

The Ashes

This Day 7 session brings you to the quiet after the flame—the space where everything unnecessary has fallen away. With Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as our mirror, we explore the beauty and complexity of what survives. You are not the story that hurt you. You are what remains. Through steady breath and reflective writing, we begin to recognize that truth—not with fanfare, but with clarity. What’s left might be raw, quiet, or unfamiliar… but it’s yours.
