COURSE
With Kathryn Vandertulip
Motherhood—whether experienced, witnessed, longed for, or survived—leaves a mark. In this course, we’ll explore that imprint through the lens of iconic screen mothers, from the sparkling chaos of Linda Belcher to the gothic reverence of Morticia Addams. These fictional women aren’t flawless—they’re full. Full of humor, fear, grace, contradiction, and love. Through their stories, and your own, we’ll reflect on the many ways care shows up: loud, quiet, awkward, devoted, anxious, elegant. This is a space for you to explore your own story of caregiving, identity, and emotional inheritance—no matter what your version of “mother” looks like. By the end of this course, you will: • Reflect on five diverse maternal archetypes drawn from film and television. • Journal honestly about your own experience with caregiving, identity, and emotional presence. • Unpack internalized beliefs about what “good” mothering looks and feels like. • Identify which parts of yourself have been silenced, hidden, or misunderstood in caregiving roles. • Use breathwork to ground yourself in the present moment and regulate emotional responses during reflection. Students Can Expect Five Themed Lessons, each built around a unique TV or film mom: Linda Belcher, Mrs. Bennet, Caroline Ingalls, Clair Huxtable, and Morticia Addams. Each lesson includes: • A warm welcome and themed reflection • A narrative or character-based teaching moment • Emotional acknowledgment around a common caregiving wound • A short, gentle breath practice • A journaling prompt and 5 minutes of ambient journaling time • A closing integration paragraph to wrap the day’s insight You’ll also encounter unexpected softness, surprising laughter, and the comfort of realizing you’re not alone in your contradictions. Motherhood is often reduced to ideals—selfless, calm, ever-capable. But real mothering, in all its forms, is messy, creative, flawed, and fiercely human. By journaling with these fictional mothers, you’ll meet the parts of yourself that are still learning how to show up, how to let go, how to lead, and how to love—on your own terms. Whether you’re a mother, daughter, caregiver, or someone simply navigating what it means to care, this course will offer reflection, relief, and room to be real.
