The Grandeur Within - Part 2 Grandeur Obstructed

With Don Joseph Goewey

I am Don Joseph Goewey, and this is an introduction to my three-part series entitled "The Grandeur Within," subtitled "The art and science of awakening to what you are already." In Part 1, titled Grandeur Unveiled, we explored the truth of what you are—your innate beauty, creativity, and inner strength. Now, in Part 2—Grandeur Obstructed—we shift our focus to what gets in the way. This section addresses the question: If I were born with such grandeur, why is that not my experience? In this section, we will explore the psychological and societal forces that have divided our minds and created confusion about our true wholeness.  The third and final course, Grandeur Awakened, turns inward, shifting from universal truths to personal experience. Here, I share my own journey of healing and transformation through surrender and Grace, demonstrating how anyone, even under unfavorable conditions, can transcend suffering, fragmentation, and misperception to recover wholeness. So, let's step into Part 2, Grandeur Obstructed.

Meet your Teacher

Don Joseph Goewey is the author of Mystic Cool: The Neuroplasticity of Attitude, The End of Stress: Four Steps to Rewire Your Brain, and Fishing for Fallen Light. He also edited two books on Anthony De Mello's spiritual insights and created the “Science of Ending Stress” course here at Insight Timer. Previously, Don worked at Stanford University Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry. He studied with Carl Rogers, considered one of the ten most influential psychologists of the 20th century, and he worked with psychiatrist Gerald Jampolsky, who pioneered an approach to psychology based on A Course in Miracles. Don later directed the Center for Attitudinal Healing, which developed methods to help people overcome catastrophic life events. The Center’s work was featured on 60 Minutes and in an Emmy-winning documentary hosted by Mr. Rogers, and it received the Excellence in Medicine citation from the American Medical Association. Don spent six years in a think tank environment that integrated neuroscience, psychology, and practical spiritual principles into an approach that alleviates stress and amplifies higher-order brain function, enabling people to flourish. This approach proved effective in high-stress corporate environments, including Fortune 100 companies. He currently directs the Center for Spiritual Exchange, which was originally founded at Fordham University by Anthony De Mello in 1986.

Lesson 1

The Divided Self - Part 1

Why do we so often feel divided—one part striving, the other yearning for peace? This session explores the split between the sacred self we were born with and the false self shaped by fear, ambition, and social pressure that we take as normal. It is actually a conditioned state that disconnects us from authenticity, meaning, and the fulfillment that arises from living in alignment with our given nature.

Lesson 2

The Divided Self - Part 2

In this lesson we explore how cultural conditioning trains us to seek fulfillment outside ourselves, where it cannot be found. Seeing this pattern and understanding how it works to block love is enough to restore us to the whole human being we were born to be.

Lesson 3

The High Road and the Low Road

In this lesson, you will learn how to shift to the higher road of consciousness, where your brain and Spirit work in harmony. You will discover how activating the brain’s high-road pathways strengthen your clarity, emotional balance, empathy, and wise decision-making. You will understand exactly how to shift from stress-driven fear reactions to a calm, elevated state to meet life with strength, vision, and confidence.

Lesson 4

Just Suppose

This session challenges the belief that we are fundamentally flawed and in need of fixing. It argues that self-dissatisfaction arises from cultural conditioning, not truth, and proposes a radical shift. Namely, that transformation comes not through effort or self-improvement, but through nonjudgmental awareness.

Lesson 5

Awareness

In this session, you will discover the power of awareness to break free of patterns that thwart your peace and happiness by hooking you into negative thoughts, emotions, and reactions. Lesson 7

The Real Work

Inner work is not separate from life or work—it is the work. Awareness practiced constantly, in the middle of living, is the foundation of everything else. Fighting, suppressing, or forcing change agitates the mind. Simply observing your experience without interference allows turbulence to settle naturally. You discover that what you have been seeking to beomce, you are already.

Lesson 8

Attachment

In this session, you will explore why attachment is the root of suffering and how it quietly pulls you away from your innate happiness. You will learn how clinging to people, possessions, roles, and outcomes provbokes stress and ultimately blinds you to the grandeur within. Drawing on the wisdom of Buddha and Christ, as well as modern research on the “Extended Self,” this session reveals how letting go of attachment awakens a deeper freedom. You will come away with a clearer understanding of what truly weighs you down—and how to return to the lightness of being that is Spirit.

Lesson 9

Fear of Failing

In this session, the fear of failing is explored as rooted in shame, not outcomes. Society conditions us to tie our worth to performance, creating perfectionism and workaholism. Shame shuts down creativity and learning. The antidote isn't more achievement — it's nonjudgmental self-awareness, which dissolves shame and naturally restores flow, joy, and authentic performance.

Lesson 10

Healing Shame

This lesson shines a light on shame—the silent, pervasive belief that you are not enough—and reveals how it quietly shapes your thoughts, behaviors, and sense of self. You will learn how shame thrives in secrecy and judgment, often masquerading as motivation or humility. The path out of shame is not self-improvement, but self-compassion. You will come to understand compassion not as indulgence, but as the courageous act of seeing your humanity without flinching—and choosing love anyway.

Lesson 11

Who Am I?

Most people strive to be the ideal partner, the devoted parent, the reliable friend, or the driven, successful professional, constantly battling the weight of others’ expectations and demands. To navigate this maze, people often adopt a mask that aligns with what is expected, carefully shielding thier real feelings, thoughts, and desires. Over time, this performance becomes second nature, and we begin to mistake who we think we are for what we truly are.

Lesson 14

Good Stress

Lesson 15

The Mirage And Oasis of Love

Five decades of research confirms that close relationships unravel when criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and emotional withdrawal take hold, deepening conflict. These patterns cycle without self-awareness, emotional regulation, or a willingness to listen to one another with empathy. In this segment, we will learn how to shift from blame to empathy to mutual understanding.

Lesson 16

Walking Each Other Home

There are two undeniable, seemingly incompatible truths about humanity that are hard to reconcile. One is that the essence of our being is love; the other is that the world is full of suffering, much of it inflicted by human beings. In this session, we will attempt to understand this from a spiritual perspective.
