Corvid Wisdom: Meditations With The Watchful Flock

With Mark Rowland

In this seven-day course, we explore the remarkable birds of Britain’s crow family — the crow, raven, rook, jackdaw, magpie, and jay — not only as symbols in folklore, but as intelligent, living beings sharing our landscapes. Each day focuses on one member of the corvid family. You will learn how to recognise the bird in the wild, understand key behavioural traits, and discover how it has appeared in British and wider mythological traditions. From the raven’s depth and presence to the rook’s community life and the jay’s woodland watchfulness, we will explore both natural history and cultural meaning. Every session includes: • A teaching section that blends ecology, behaviour and folklore • Clear guidance on how to distinguish similar species • Reflection on the psychological qualities each bird represents • A guided meditation inspired by that bird’s particular strengths • A reflective integration question to deepen learning By the end of the course, you will: • Be able to confidently tell the difference between crow, rook, jackdaw and raven • Develop a richer awareness of Britain’s corvid species in your everyday surroundings • Understand key mythic and symbolic themes associated with these birds • Cultivate steadier observation, resilience, and presence through nature-inspired meditation This course is suitable for beginners and experienced meditators alike. It is especially supportive for those who feel drawn to nature, folklore, and contemplative awareness practices. You do not need prior knowledge of birds or mythology. Just curiosity — and a willingness to observe more closely. Over seven days, we move from solitary watchfulness to collective intelligence, gradually building a deeper sense of awareness rooted in the natural world. The flock is already around you. This course simply invites you to notice.
