Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott right at the ocean's edge.
You can probably hear the waves as they slowly lap up onto the shingle shore here at Torcross.
Here in the evening the outlook is stunning.
There's a sweep of the bay.
It's called Start Bay and I can see this wonderful pinky purpley hue of the sky as the sun sinks and this light is illuminating and reflecting off these gentle lapping waves as they come in from the sea.
And my reflection today was a quote I heard.
I don't know if it's a well-known quote or whether this person just spontaneously made it up on the spot.
But she said,
It's really good to remember that we are not a drop in the ocean.
We are the ocean.
We are not a drop in the ocean.
We are the ocean.
And there are times,
Certainly for me in my life,
When I look at everything that's going on in the world,
When I look at the news and I hear about atrocities and wars and famine and sadness and conflict,
Where I just feel like,
Who am I to do anything?
I am just this drop in the ocean and nothing I can do can make a difference.
But actually it's so good to realize when we feel that sense of helplessness,
It's just a shift the way that we're seeing what we're talking about.
So rather than seeing yourself as this small individual separate being trying to make your way through life,
It's like when you look within,
You realize that you are not this separate individual.
You are not alone in the world.
You are not having to fight your way through life.
You are actually connected to the power and essence and energy that is the life force of everything we see around us,
The universal energy.
And that universal energy is taking form through us,
Through you,
Through me.
We are all connected to it.
We are all part of it.
We are it.
And then it becomes the identity that we all have.
The background,
The history,
The skills,
The genetics,
The nurturing,
The nature,
All of it takes shape through us.
But it is that divine spiritual essence that is coming through us.
And when I get a sense of that,
When I realize that I'm not a drop in the ocean,
I'm not a little human being with a bit of a sense of spirituality in my heart,
When I realize that I am that spiritual energy,
That is the core and essence and soul of me and you and everyone.
When I realize that,
I realize that I am not a drop in the ocean,
I am the ocean.
And it just makes everything seem so different.
So today's reflection is all about that.
I'd love to know what you make of that.
What would it be if you could see that you are not a drop in the ocean,
You are the ocean.
The ocean is in that drop.
That is who you truly are.
What difference would that make for you?
Let me know your reflections and don't forget to join me again tomorrow for another five minutes in nature.
