Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.
I'm in a little gully here on Dartmoor surrounded by ferns as they come up the gully side and behind me you might be able to hear the rustling of trees in the wind.
It's quite blowy and I've had to come and find shelter and up above me I can see the sky which is blue but it's got white and grey clouds and today is threatening showers.
Rain at any minute.
So I am hopeful that I might get back before it rains,
But who knows here on Dartmoor,
Because this is the weather we're used to.
The rain rushes in and then disappears as quickly as it came.
And you can probably just hear there's a sheep just rushing behind me trying to find the rest of its buddies.
I think it feels a little bit isolated with me standing in its patch.
And today is a reflection that I just found myself reflecting on for so long and I want to share it with you.
I went up to an event recently and this is a new enterprise which is looking to support young people with autism to support them find work and it is an engagement with the land,
With permaculture,
With the environment.
So there's an interaction between supporting these young people young adults,
Having them connect with land and nature and then also equipping them with skills so that they can go and find employment.
And it was an open day as this new enterprise opened its doors and wanted us to share with the local community what it was up to.
And I went up there and was delighted to see in this rather large space a baby grand piano.
I mean the space was so big that the grand piano,
It fitted in there beautifully,
This dark wooden instrument.
And I was talking to one of the people who was helping to organise the event,
And I said,
You know,
What's the purpose of the piano?
And she smiled at me and said,
I don't know.
She said,
We just felt very strongly drawn to bring this piano here,
To give it a home here.
And we have a feeling that it's going to find someone,
It's going to connect with someone and someone is going to come up here and play it and befriend it.
So there's nothing as yet that it's being used for but my hunch is at some point in the future there will be someone that finds it and it will be played.
And there are a couple of things that really struck me.
First of all that a piano on its own is nothing more than a piece of furniture.
It's only when somebody comes and plays it that it comes alive,
That its purpose,
Its true purpose is able to be shared more widely.
So that was the first thing that I began to realize is that there is something about interaction and relationship.
And certainly with me here on Insight Timer,
When I share these daily tracks,
One of the things that I find inspiring is that I'm not just sharing them into the ether,
That you listen and you respond and you connect with me.
For me,
That's brings it alive.
It feels a little bit like the piano being played.
And the second thing that really struck me was that actually the piano is in the right place,
Even though there is no one to play it at the moment,
Because at some time in the future,
It will find someone to play it.
The piano will be found.
The person looking for a piano will find a piano and music will be made.
And it just kind of got me thinking that we don't know who we are yet to meet,
What experiences we are yet to engage with.
Things in the future,
A bit like the piano,
Is that we don't know who or what in the future we are meant to be in relationship with.
And when we come in relationship with that,
We share our music.
So that is my reflection today.
Firstly,
That a piano needs someone to play it.
And it's the same with us.
There's something about being in relationship,
Being connected,
Allowing our music to come through us.
So that's the reflection today.
And of course,
Don't forget to let me know what you make of this.
Can you see yourself as a piano waiting to be played,
Waiting to meet up with someone?
Can you realize that when you're in relationship,
When you're connected,
That is when the music is created and everybody gets to share the beauty of the song?
Your reflections and don't forget to join me again tomorrow for another 5 minutes in nature.
