COURSE

Sleeping Like An Animal

With Zuzana Robertson, AFBPsS, MSc, CSci

A seven-night children’s sleep course combining somatic body scan, breathwork, guided visualisation, and nervous system regulation techniques for child anxiety relief, bedtime resistance, sleep onset, and deep natural sleep for children aged four to ten. Every parent knows the feeling. Your child is exhausted. You can see it. They can feel it. And yet here they are. Still going. Still talking. Still finding one more reason to stay awake. This is not stubbornness. It is a nervous system that has not yet received the signal it needs. The signal that says the day is over. That it is safe to let go. That sleep is not something to resist but something to fall into. Animals receive this signal without trying. Bears become heavy and warm and sleep simply finds them. Cats purr and their whole body heals. Otters float and let the water carry them. They do not fight sleep. They follow the biological intelligence every creature on earth is born with. So do your children. They were born with it too. This course reconnects them with it. Seven nights. Seven animals. Seven sleep music tracks that follow. Each one a different doorway into the deep natural sleep that is already waiting. Designed by a psychologist and certified hypnotherapist with eighteen years of clinical experience. Written in language a five year old can follow and a twelve year old will not have outgrown. And gentle enough that parents fall asleep before the session ends. For children aged five to twelve, parents, and anyone who has ever needed a gentler way into sleep. For anxious bedtimes. For the child who cannot switch off. For the child who is afraid of the dark. For any family who needs tonight to be different.

Meet your Teacher

Zuzana Robertson is a psychologist, insomnia specialist, certified hypnotherapist, and meditation teacher with eighteen years of clinical experience specialising in child and adult anxiety, nervous system regulation, and sleep. Her work with children draws on somatic therapy, neuroscience for insomnia, and developmental psychology. She understands not just how children’s nervous systems work but how to speak to them in language that reaches all the way in. She is also a published children’s author whose books draw on the same principles of psychology and emotional development that underpin this course. Sleeping Like An Animal brings together everything she knows about how children actually fall asleep. Not through instruction. Not through effort. Through the body’s own intelligence, gently remembered.

Lesson 1

The Sleeping Bear - How To Make Your Body So Heavy And Warm That Sleep Simply Finds You

Of all the animals in the world, the bear is one of the greatest sleepers ever to have lived. When winter arrives, the bear does not struggle to sleep. It does not lie awake thinking about tomorrow. It simply becomes heavy. And warm. And still. And sleep finds it every single time. Tonight your child learns the bear’s secret. And discovers that their body already knows how to do the same thing. This session uses progressive somatic heaviness, one of the most well-researched techniques in sleep medicine, wrapped entirely in the world of the bear’s winter den. Each part of the body becomes bear-heavy, bear-warm, bear-still, moving slowly from the feet to the crown until there is nothing left to hold. Research consistently shows that this kind of deliberate, progressive body release shifts the nervous system from sympathetic activation into the parasympathetic rest state faster than almost any other bedtime technique available. Your child will experience it as becoming a bear. Their nervous system will experience it as the biological off-switch finally being pressed. Most children are asleep before the bear curls up completely. And the ones who are not will be very close to the den door.

Lesson 2

The Purring Cat - How Making One Small Sound Heals Your Body All The Way Through

Cats have a superpower that most people do not know about. When a cat purrs, the vibration it produces sits in a frequency range that researchers have found associated with bone healing, tissue repair, and profound nervous system calm. The cat does not purr because it is trying to do any of these things. It purrs because it is content. Because it is safe. Because it has found the perfect warm spot and the world is exactly right. Tonight your child learns to 'purr'. This session uses gentle sustained humming as a vagus nerve stimulation technique wrapped entirely in the experience of being the most relaxed cat in the world. The vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the body, runs directly through the throat. Gentle humming vibrates this nerve directly, triggering the parasympathetic rest response in ways that simple breathing alone cannot always reach. For children who carry anxiety in their bodies, who find it difficult to release even when they are tired, the purring cat session is often the most immediately effective in the course. Research on humming and vagal tone consistently shows a rapid reduction in heart rate, a drop in cortisol, and an increase in the felt sense of safety within sixty seconds of sustained gentle humming. Your child will experience it as being a very sleepy, very contented cat. Their nervous system will receive one of the most direct calming signals available. And children absolutely love making purring sounds. This is the session they will ask for again and again.

Lesson 3

The Floating Otter - How To Let Go Of Every Last Bit Of Effort And Let Something Else Carry You

Sea otters sleep on water. They float on their backs under the open sky, their paws resting on their tummies, their faces turned up to the stars. And because they live in the ocean, they could drift apart in the night if they did not do one remarkable thing. They hold paws. Sometimes an entire group of otters floats together in a raft, holding onto each other so none of them drifts away while they sleep. This image is one of the most emotionally warm in the entire animal world. And it contains one of the most powerful somatic sleep concepts available for children. Trust. The willingness to be carried rather than to carry yourself. Tonight your child learns to float. This session uses progressive physical lightening rather than heavying, the release of all muscular effort as the body becomes light enough to rest on the surface of something that holds it completely. The water becomes a metaphor for the bed, for the night itself, for the simple biological fact that rest is the default state the body returns to when it stops trying to stay awake. For children who struggle with the feeling of letting go, who feel anxious when they are not in control, the otter session is often profoundly releasing. Because it reframes the surrender into sleep not as losing control but as trusting something that has always been there. The water always holds the otter. The bed always holds the child. Sleep always comes when the trying stops.

Lesson 4

The Butterfly - How To Fold Your Wings And Become Perfectly, Completely Still

Butterflies spend all day in motion. From flower to flower. Always moving. Always going. Always busy with the beautiful work of being a butterfly in the world. And then evening comes. And they find one perfect leaf. On one perfect branch. And they fold their wings. Very slowly. One fold at a time. Until they are perfectly still. So still that you could walk right past them and never know they were there. This session uses the breath as wings. Each inhale the wings open slightly. Each exhale they fold a little more. Closer and closer to stillness with every breath. Until the butterfly is not flying anywhere. Is not going anywhere. Is simply folded. And still. And completely, perfectly at rest on its leaf. For the busy child who is always going, always thinking, always wondering about the next thing, the butterfly session offers something profound. The proof that even the most active, most fluttery, most in-motion creature in the world can become completely still. Not by force. Not by giving up. Simply by choosing the right leaf. And folding. One breath at a time. Children who struggle to understand why they need to slow down respond beautifully to the butterfly analogy. Even butterflies stop. Even the busiest, most colourful, most wonderful flying thing in the garden comes to rest. And when it does, it is even more beautiful than when it was flying.

Lesson 5

The Deep Sea Whale - How To Breathe So Slowly That The Whole Ocean Moves With You

Whales are the largest animals that have ever lived on Earth. And they breathe the most slowly of almost any creature. When a whale is resting deeply in the ocean, it may take a breath every ten minutes or more. Every single breath is a choice. A conscious, deliberate, magnificent event. The whale does not breathe automatically the way we do when we are busy and stressed. It breathes with intention. With presence. With the full, deep, patient lungs of an animal that has no reason to rush. Tonight your child breathes like a whale. This session uses dramatically extended breath as a sleep technique. Each breath longer than the last. Each pause between breaths becoming more comfortable, more natural, more like the whale’s easy pause between great slow breaths in the deep dark ocean. The extended exhale activates the vagal brake directly, dropping the heart rate and shifting the nervous system from alert to rest. But your child will not know any of this. They will simply be the whale. Moving slowly through the deep, warm, completely quiet ocean. Taking one enormous slow breath at a time. For children whose bedtime difficulty is primarily an overactive, anxious mind rather than physical tension, the whale breath is the most effective session in the course. Giving the mind something specific and wonderful to attend to, the enormous slowness of a whale’s breath occupies the analytical thinking that keeps children awake, while the extended exhale does its physiological work beneath. Many children find the whale breath so profoundly calming that they request this session specifically on difficult nights. Parents have described it as the first time their anxious child’s breathing visibly changed at bedtime.

Lesson 6

The Owl In The Tree - How To Hear Every Sound In The Night And Know That Every Single One Means Safe

Owls are extraordinary. They have the most remarkable hearing of any animal. They can hear a mouse moving under thirty centimetres of snow. They can identify the direction of a sound to within one degree. They process the night’s sounds continuously, completely, with total awareness. And yet somehow owls sleep beautifully. Because they understand something that anxious children at bedtime often do not. Every sound in the night is simply information. Not a threat. Not something to investigate. Simply the sound of a world that is safe, going quietly about its business in the dark. The creak of the house. The sound of wind in the trees. A car passing in the street. To the owl these are not alarming. They are simply what the night sounds like. And the night is safe. Tonight this session directly addresses nighttime anxiety in children using the owl as a framework for cognitive defusion from fearful night sounds. It teaches children to hear sounds the way the owl hears them. With calm curiosity rather than alarm. With the deep, settled wisdom of a creature who has watched over thousands of nights and knows, with complete certainty, that the dark is safe. This is the most important session in the course for children who are afraid of the dark or who are woken by night sounds. It is also the session most likely to be shared by parents of anxious children. Because it works at the level of the fear rather than simply distracting from it.

Lesson 7

The Sleeping Star - How Everything In The World Rests. Including You. Including Now.

Stars burn for billions of years. The sun has been shining for four and a half billion years. And one day, long, long from now, after a life more full and complete and extraordinary than anything we can imagine, even the sun will rest. Everything in the universe has rest built into it. Not as a failure. Not as giving up. As part of the most fundamental design of everything that exists. Tonight this session does something no other night in the course has done. It zooms all the way out. From the warm bed. To the house. To the street. To the town. To the country. To the turning earth. To the solar system. To the galaxy. To the vast, extraordinary, impossibly beautiful universe that is, right now, in the dark and the quiet, resting alongside your child. And your child is part of it. This is the most expansive session in the course and also the most deeply calming for children who have remained awake for all six previous nights. It draws on all six animal techniques in a gentle integration. The heaviness of the bear. The purring of the cat. The floating of the otter. The stillness of the butterfly. The slow breath of the whale. The peaceful wisdom of the owl. And then it takes your child all the way out to the stars and brings them back as something very small, very warm, very safe, and very ready to sleep.
