Envy can be a good thing! Being envious of something someone has or the way someone lives their life can be inspiring if you learn to look at it from a different point of view. This 5 minute meditation will reset and retrain your feelings on envy and help you gain new clarity and insight into insecurities that we all experience. Jealousy, envy, and self-consciousness are normal human emotions that most of us label as bad or negative. Today's meditation walks you through the process of questioning if there is an upside to envy and what the benefits of it may actually be.

Envy tests our tolerance for watching other people get what they want,

And reminds us of what we've been too afraid to pursue.

What if instead of envy,

It was actually inspiration?

Welcome to Coached by Nikki Dyer.

Allow yourself to get comfortable,

Whether you are sitting or lying down.

Whatever feels right for you.

Take a deep breath in,

And let that go.

Close your eyes if they aren't already.

If your tongue is touching the roof of your mouth,

Just let it drop,

And unclench your jaw.

Take your shoulders and bring them all the way up to your ears,

And then let them go.

Take your head and just move it from side to side,

And then backward and forward.

Roll your shoulders back,

And take one hand and put it on your heart,

And feel the beating.

And just listen,

Letting your breath find its natural rhythm now,

Feeling relaxed and open-minded to the messaging you are about to hear today,

And trusting that it found its way to you,

By no accident.

Today we discuss the upside of envy.

In our culture,

We view jealousy and envy as unsavory qualities.

Someone has something you want,

Or is doing something that you would like to do for yourself.

Maybe a friend announces their engagement,

While you're still very single,

Or witnessing someone live out their dream job,

While you are still working at one you hate.

Your envy in those situations is painful,

And if you can barely tolerate the wash of shame that comes from me saying that,

You are not alone.

But rather than pushing it down,

I want you to see it today for what it is,

And to view moments of envy as moments of inspiration,

To follow them.

If your envy tells you what you want,

I invite you to bring something forward now,

Something you find yourself envious of in someone else's life,

And as you fill in the details with your mind,

Become aware of that tightness in your chest,

And how your breath has become short and shallow,

Which probably leads you to pause.

So let's take a resetting breath together now.

In through your nose,

All the way down into your belly,

And back out through the mouth.

Seeing people have or do things that you want is natural,

And contrary to what you might believe,

It's normal.

Envy tests our tolerance for watching people get what they want,

And reminds us of what we have been too afraid to pursue,

A beacon of light,

Illuminating all of the potential that you already hold inside.

Follow your envy,

It tells you what you want.

Take a final deep breath in,

And exhale,

And when you feel ready,

Open your eyes.

Years ago, I was very envious of my best friend when I learned that she became pregnant. I had wanted to have a child at that time, but the timing was not right for me. Thank you for creating this insightful practice. It’s profoundly grounding.

This was perfect. Thank you! I need to get back into my body and I love that you started with that. I’m envious of people who seem to be succeeding quickly effortlessly.

If i applaud what others have that I want to, I will attract it to myself . Thank you for this perspective .

Thought-provoking. I would have liked it to be longer. Thank you, Nikki, for the insight!
