Welcome to the first meditation in this series on forgiveness.
Before we begin,
Take a moment to ensure you won't be disturbed during this practice.
Silence your phone or any other devices that may interrupt you.
You might like to have a glass of water nearby or perhaps a journal and a pen to capture any insights that arise later.
Now find a comfortable place to sit,
Whether that's on a cushion on the floor or in a chair.
Make sure your spine is straight and upright,
Aligning your head and neck naturally.
Let your hands rest gently in your lap.
Pause here for a moment and feel as if you've arrived.
Allow yourself to settle into this space.
Notice the support beneath you,
Whether it's the cushion or the chair.
Feel that the support is carrying you.
Trust that it's holding you with stability and care.
If you feel comfortable,
Gently close your eyes.
If you prefer,
You can keep your gaze soft,
Allowing your eyes to rest.
Now take a deep breath in and exhale.
Release your jaw.
Soften all the muscles in your face.
Let your shoulders drop down away from your ears.
Acknowledge how you're feeling right now.
Whatever it is,
There's no need to judge or analyse.
Simply let it be.
Now begin to breathe mindfully.
Feel the cool air as it enters your nose and fills your lungs.
Sense the warmth of the breath as you exhale,
Releasing it fully.
As thoughts arise,
And they will,
Let them go gently like clouds passing through the sky.
Bring your awareness back to your breath.
Breathing in,
Breathing out.
Allow each breath to calm your body and your mind.
With every exhale,
Release the tension in your body.
Allow each breath to calm your body and your mind.
With every exhale,
Release any tension you may be holding.
Let go.
Each breath invites you to journey inward.
We begin this journey of forgiveness with ourselves.
The foundation of forgiving others lies in the ability to be compassionate and gentle with ourselves.
We are all human,
Prone to mistakes,
Carrying burdens of past actions,
Judgments and unfilled expectations.
This is the moment to acknowledge those things.
Without harshness,
Without blame.
And recognise that you have always been doing the best you can with the knowledge,
Resources and awareness you had at the time.
Be kind to yourself.
Forgive yourself.
As you breathe in,
Feel the breath infuse you with love and compassion.
As you breathe out,
Allow the past to fall away.
Placing it gently where it belongs,
Behind you.
Each exhale is an opportunity to release the weight of past mistakes,
Regrets and self-judgment.
Feel the ripples of tension in your life smoothing out,
Calming in the present moment.
Notice how by releasing old grievances and forgiving yourself,
The challenges of tomorrow seem less overwhelming.
Let go of the expectations,
The judgments and the criticisms that have clouded your mind.
Take a deep breath.
As you exhale,
Consciously,
Purposefully,
Let it all go.
In this stillness,
Grant yourself permission to be free.
Free from guilt,
Free from shame,
Free from the need to be perfect.
Realise that forgiveness is not just about justifying past actions or diminishing their significance.
It's about liberating yourself from the emotional chains that keep you stuck in the past.
Forgiving yourself and others does not make anyone right.
It does not give away your power.
What it does is release you from the grip of resentment,
Allowing you to move forward.
In forgiving,
You reclaim your freedom,
Your peace.
Remember,
Every person,
Including you,
Is doing the best they can with the resources,
Wisdom and awareness available to them in any given moment.
When you forgive,
You're not erasing what has happened,
But you are choosing to not let it define you anymore.
Trust in this moment that you are supported.
Trust that goodness resides in all of us,
Even if it may be hidden or difficult to see.
The act of forgiveness,
In itself,
Is an act of trust.
A trust in life's ability to bring healing,
Growth and transformation.
Let love and kindness guide you now.
Know that forgiveness is a process,
Not a one-time event.
It is a journey that may take time,
But every moment you spend in forgiveness is a moment of liberation.
You are releasing the emotional cords that bind you to past pain.
Breathe in deeply once more.
And as you exhale,
Feel lighter,
Freer and more at peace.
And now,
Gently bring your awareness back to your body.
Start by wiggling some fingers and toes,
Feeling the sensations returning.
If you closed your eyes,
Blink them open slowly.
Reconnect with your surroundings.
Notice the space around you.
Take a stretch if your body calls for it.
Roll your shoulders or reach your arms overhead,
Inviting movement and energy back into your being.
Feel grounded,
Calm and ready to continue with your day,
Carrying with you the lightness of forgiveness and the knowledge that you are on a path towards healing.
Thank you for joining this meditation.
May the peace you cultivate here ripple out into the rest of your life.
