Insomnia is often defined as a state of hyper-arousal and so it is difficult to go to sleep. This meditation is specifically designed to cultivate a relaxed state of mind that is conducive to going to sleep. This reaction is often described as the relaxation response and involves a gradual reduction in arousal so you can drift off to sleep.

Thank you for joining me for this meditation for relieving insomnia.

Let's begin by getting really comfortable.

Take a moment to settle in.

Go ahead and gently close your eyes now.

Tuning into the breath.

Feeling the body expanding on the inhalation and softening on the exhalation.

Noticing and becoming aware of the kind of changes this breathing brings to your body.

Softening and relaxing.

Allowing yourself to sink a little deeper into the surface beneath you.

Noticing the rise and the fall of your breath.

Your mind might wander occasionally through worries or concerns that you might have around sleeping.

And that's okay.

Just gently bring your awareness back to the breath.

Air moving in.

Air moving out.

Finding some peace and stillness here.

No one to impress.

Nothing to plan for.

Nothing to fix.

Just be here and breathe.

Air moving in.

Air moving out.

Resting here.

Keep refocusing on your breath.

Because it sends a powerful message to your mind to relax.

Letting thoughts drift on by.

No need to dwell upon them,

Attach to them or follow them.

You can just acknowledge any thoughts and let them go.

Each breath dissolving any tension.

Feeling yourself melting into relaxation.

Relax your jaw.

Feel the weight of your body pressing down into the surface beneath you.

Becoming more and more centred and calm.

More relaxed here.

As you do from this place,

You can gently transition into sleep.

Into a wonderful,

Restful sleep.

A deep and peaceful sleep.

And who knows when the waking state ends and sleep begins.

As you contemplate those words,

Feel a wonderful wave of relaxation.

Spreading from the top of your head throughout your entire body.

Relax the muscles of your face.

Relax your brow.

Your eyelids.

Your jaw.

Relax your neck.

Your shoulders.

Your chest.

Your back.

Relax both your arms and hands.

Relax your belly,

Your hips and your legs and feet.

Your entire body heavy and relaxed.

Maybe you can become aware of the outline of your body.

Exactly where it is.

Feeling calm,

Relaxed and peaceful.

Ready for a restful night's sleep now.

Allow your focus to remain on your breathing.

And notice how this calms the mind and encourages relaxation.

And that means you will sleep comfortably and calmly.

As you do,

Imagine resting under the light of the full moon.

That beautiful,

Nurturing light in the black,

Inky sky.

Bathing in the moonlight.

Observing the silent,

Twinkling stars.

Infinite in number.

Relaxing in the quietness.

This tranquil energy.

Slowing down.

Feeling spacious.

Feeling free.

Notice your mind now.

How it feels clearer.

Noticing the spaciousness here.

The stillness.

The calmness.

Feeling those qualities in your mind and in your body.

Everything else has just faded away.

You can let go of my words now.

From this place of tranquility,

You can allow yourself to drift off to sleep.

Drifting towards sleep.

With each breath moving closer and closer to sleep.

Dreamily drifting.

Maybe you can drift into sleep now.

Or in a moment.

And that's okay.

Relaxing.

Resting.

Surrendering to sleep.

Drifting off to a world of sleep and dreams.

Allowing yourself to drift and wander.

Going to sleep.

Sleeping deeply and easily.

This was my first time of listening to this and I'm impressed as I fell asleep halfway through. It also helped calm my racing mind.

Hi Catherine. That was a very good meditation. I needed that after the day I've had with a neighbour who has not left me and my husband alone for quite some time and we are getting quite sick of it. But we cannot tell her because she will get upset about it. I've spoken to my mental health doctor about it today and he said that I can either accept it or draw a line under neath it I I've tried to feel like I want to draw a line underneath it but I'm finding difficulty doing it .
