At this point, there exists no scientifically validated way to reduce the noise of tinnitus. But we can reduce the suffering often associated with the condition. In ths course, students will learn how to apply the tools of mindfulness in order to reduce the suffering caused by the three components of tinnitus distress: thoughts, emotions, and physical reactivity.

Dr. Peter Vernezze is a psychotherapist, mindfulness trainer, and meditation teacher. And, like you, he has tinnitus. He has used the method described in this course on his own tinnitus and to work with groups online and individuals in session.

Lesson 1

Mindfulness and Tinnitus

In the first lesson, students are introduced to the concept of mindfulness and why it is particularly useful and working with tinnitus distress. The first lesson also introduces the student to the practice of meditation and provides a simple but effective practice.

Lesson 2

Tinnitus Distress and Thoughts

In the second lesson, we explore the first of the three components of tinnitus distress : thought. Specifically, we examine the ways in which our thoughts bring about distress in the case of tinnitus and what we can do about it. In addition, the student is introduced to the practice of informal mindfulness.

Lesson 3

Tinnitus Distress and the Body

In this lesson, we turn to the physical component of tinnitus distress and develop relaxation techniques that can assist us in calming the nervous system, a central important skill for those with tinnitus.

Lesson 4

Tinnitus Distress and the Emotions

In this final lesson, we tackle the distressing emotions those were tentative often experience. We review how previous strategies can be applied to distressing tinnitus emotions and explore several new ways to regulate the emotion, including the practice of RAIN.
