Hi guys,
Welcome.
Today,
We are going to talk about all or nothing thinking.
Which is a cognitive distortion that convinces us that things are either completely good or completely bad,
Success or failure,
Perfect or ruined,
Just to give a few examples.
And so if you don't know already,
My name is Kiona.
I'm a licensed professional counselor in the Pennsylvania area,
And I help people heal from trauma and help heal their nervous system.
And so I have a video going over what cognitive behavioral therapy is.
And this is a brief talk script.
To help understand the different types of cognitive distortions,
Which is another way of saying negative thoughts.
And so if you haven't already,
I invite you to check out the video just to kind of help you have an idea of what CBT,
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,
Is and if you've already done that great.
And sew.
I invite you to take a big deep inhale through the nose.
Holding at the top.
Exhaling out.
Letting that go.
So what is all or nothing thinking?
This is an example of what this distortion sounds like.
If I miss one workout,
I've failed.
If I'm not productive today,
I'm lazy.
If this relationship has problems,
Maybe it's doomed.
It can feel exhausting because there's no room for being human.
For many people,
All or nothing thinking develops as protection.
And so sometimes it forms from high expectations.
Unpredictability.
Trauma,
Or environments where mistakes did not feel safe.
I invite you to either,
You can jot these down,
Like you can pause here,
And if you would like,
You can take a moment to journal,
Or you can jot this down,
These questions down,
And then come back to it when you have more time.
This is also,
These questions are also listed in the description,
Just in case you don't have anything to write with right now.
And so,
What can be helpful when you're trying to challenge a thought is pausing and asking where am I viewing things in this extreme?
Is there a middle ground?
What would good enough look like?
What should I say to someone I love in this situation?
And so the goal is that we're trying to shift from extremes into flexibility.
And so instead of I failed,
We wanna try I'm still learning.
So instead of I've ruined everything,
We wanna try one moment does not define the whole story.
Instead of I have to do it perfectly,
We want to try progress counts too.
So with that,
I invite you to take one last final inhale.
And a slow exhale.
And repeat to yourself,
I don't have to be perfect to be growing.
Hilling lives in the gray area.
Have a beautiful day.
