Hello and welcome.
I'm Mark Rowland and I'm so grateful that you've chosen to use this time to join me in this reflection and meditation.
Just take a moment to arrive,
To settle into where you are and just begin to notice the breath.
There's something I want to explore with you today.
It's very easy,
Almost automatic in fact,
To give our time and attention to what feels familiar to us.
The same habits,
The same routines,
The same kinds of conversations in the same environments.
Not because they're always right for us but because they are known and familiar to us.
They don't really ask much of us or challenge us.
They don't stretch us at all.
And in the moment that can feel really comfortable.
It can feel so much easier to stay where things are predictable.
Even when something deeper inside you knows that you're not really moving forward.
And over time that has a real effect.
You can start to feel stuck.
Like you're circling the same ground over and over.
Like your energy is being depleted but not in a way that actually builds anything meaningful for your life.
This is not a failure.
It's just how attention works.
It follows what we know what's familiar.
It follows what's easy for us to return to.
So today in this session it's about noticing that.
Seeing where your attention has been going and whether it's taken you somewhere that you really want to be going.
Or even seeing if it's taken you in a backward direction or somewhere completely opposite to where your true self wants to go.
Because even a really small shift in where you place your attention over time can change the direction you move in.
So just begin by settling into the body.
Allowing the shoulders to soften.
And just let the breath be natural.
And allow yourself to be here.
Begin by bringing your attention fully into the body.
Noticing the weight of where you are.
The contact with the surface beneath you.
And the breath just moving in it's own natural rhythm.
There is nothing you need to change here.
Just gently arriving.
Now bring to mind something that is familiar in your life.
A habit.
A routine.
A situation you find yourself returning to often.
Something that feels really easy to fall back into.
You don't need to analyse it but just see it clearly.
And as you hold that in awareness,
Noticing how it feels in the body.
Is there a sense of comfort there?
Or something else alongside it?
Maybe a slight heaviness.
A nagging feeling of going in circles.
Or a feeling of being held back.
Just noticing whatever is true for you.
Now just stay with that for a moment.
This familiar old pattern.
This place your attention has been tending to flow.
Notice how easy the mind settles there.
And how natural it feels to return to something that is familiar to you.
That you have perhaps been doing for years.
And at the same time,
Notice what it gives you.
And what it doesn't give you.
Let that be a gentle observation.
Now very gently,
Begin to create a little space between you and that old familiar pattern.
Not forcibly pushing it away,
Just stepping back slightly.
As if you are no longer standing inside it,
But looking at it from a small distance.
Allowing the breath to support that space.
Each exhale,
A soft release.
Each inhale creates a little more room.
And from here,
Notice that you are not the habit.
You are not the routine.
You are the one who has been returning to it.
And that really does mean something important.
It means your attention can move.
Now,
Gently bring to mind something else.
Something that feels more aligned to your purpose.
A direction.
A choice.
A way of living that you've really felt drawn toward.
It might feel slightly unfamiliar.
Maybe even a bit uncomfortable.
But there is something about it that feels more honest.
More aligned with who you truly are.
Allow your attention to rest there just for a few moments.
And notice now how it feels in your body.
It doesn't have to feel perfect.
In fact,
It might feel uncertain.
But,
Is there a sense of openness?
A sense of movement?
Now imagine giving a little more of your attention to that direction.
Just a little.
Not everything,
But just enough.
As if you're turning slightly toward it.
And see if you can notice what happens in your body as you do.
Even the very smallest shift in attention can really begin to change how things feel.
There is no need to force anything.
This is simply about recognising.
Recognising that where your attention goes is something you participate in.
And over time,
What you return to begins to grow and flourish.
So just stay here now for a little while.
Resting your attention on something that feels aligned and authentic to you.
A direction that you want to be heading.
And just let that become a little more familiar.
When you're ready,
Begin to bring your awareness back to the breath.
Back to the body.
The weight of you.
Where you are.
The space around you.
Taking a slightly deeper breath now.
And just notice how you feel.
Wiggling your fingers and toes and bringing gentle movement back into your body.
Maybe a nice stretch will feel good for you.
And if you haven't already,
Gently open up your eyes.
Thank you so much for practicing with me today.
Before you move on,
Just a simple reflection to take with you.
The familiar will always be there.
It will always be so easy to return to.
But remember,
At the same time,
Your attention can move.
Even if it's in small ways,
Even if it's just for a few moments at a time.
And those small moments can begin to shape the new direction that you are heading.
Have a beautiful rest of your day.
Go in peace.
Namaste.
