Hello and welcome.

The importance of carbon dioxide in breathing.

I'm fascinated by CO2 and want to share some important facts about it.

It plays an important role in breathing.

Oxygen is often seen as the most essential molecule for life,

But carbon dioxide plays an equally essential role.

It maintains the body's balance and functioning.

CO2 is a key regulator of our breathing rate.

When the level of CO2 in the blood increases,

It sends signals to the brain's respiratory centre to adjust our breathing.

This ensures oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal remain in balance.

CO2 also maintains the body's acid-base balance by controlling the pH level of the blood.

A proper concentration of CO2 keeps the blood slightly alkaline,

Allowing vital biochemical processes to function efficiently.

CO2 assists in the delivery of oxygen to body tissues.

Oxygen gets bound up by haemoglobin in the blood,

And haemoglobin then delivers oxygen to the cells and tissues of the body.

In order to do this,

CO2 needs to be present to liberate the oxygen from the haemoglobin.

It can then be delivered to the cells and tissues where it's needed.

In conclusion,

CO2 plays a crucial role in regulating breathing and supporting oxygen transport.

It is therefore not just a waste product,

But vital to our respiratory system.
