Welcome to this Taoist reflection,
The Hidden Gems Beneath the Earth.
So,
Find your comfy space,
Warm and cozy.
Feel your body beginning to soften,
Letting go.
Take a deep breath in,
And a slow,
Gentle breath out,
Releasing with a soft sigh.
Breathe in,
Breathe out,
Letting go of any stress or tension.
Gently close your eyes.
In a quiet valley surrounded by low,
Rolling hills,
There lived an old Taoist teacher named Wei.
He was known not for grand teachings,
But for simple tasks.
And each day,
He could be found in the same place,
Kneeling in the soil,
His hands covered in dirt,
Gently turning the earth.
To those who passed by,
It seemed like nothing special.
It was just someone,
Someone and the ground.
One afternoon,
A young woman came to see him.
Her face was tired,
Her eyes heavy,
And something that she could not quite name.
She said,
I've tried to find peace.
I've read,
I've listened,
I've searched,
But all I feel is heaviness.
She looked down at the soil in his hands,
And she said quietly,
My life,
It feels like this.
It is messy.
It is unclear and so difficult.
Wei nodded,
As if she had said something very familiar.
Without speaking,
Wei just gestured for her to sit beside him,
And then he placed a small trowel in her hand.
Dig,
He said gently.
The woman hesitated,
Then pressed the trowel into the earth.
The soil resisted,
Her shoulders tightened,
Her breath became shallow.
Wei noticed this,
And he said softly,
Just pause.
Before you dig,
Breathe.
He placed one hand lightly over his heart,
The other resting on his belly.
And he said,
Breathe in,
Slowly,
And his voice was like the wind through knees,
And let the breath fall out without effort.
And so,
The woman followed.
She breathed in slowly,
And she let the breath just fall out without effort.
At first,
Her breath felt uneven,
Distracted,
But Wei continued.
Again,
Breathe in,
As if you are making space within you,
And gently breathe out,
As if you are softening everything that you are holding.
Breathe in,
Make space.
Breathe out,
Release.
Something began to shift,
Her shoulders they dropped slightly,
And the tightness in her chest loosened.
You do not have to fight the dirt,
Wei said quietly,
Or the moment you are in,
But just let your breath be the space in which everything is allowed.
And so,
They breathed together in silence.
And for the first time,
The woman felt that she was not working against her experience,
But she was gently being with it.
Now,
Wei said softly,
You may continue.
So,
This time as she dug,
Something felt different.
The earth was still heavy,
There were still some stones,
Still some resistance,
But her breath stayed with her,
Slow,
Steady,
Supportive.
This still feels difficult,
She said,
And Wei nodded.
Yes,
He said,
But you are no longer alone inside it.
She paused,
Feeling into that,
And then she continued.
Suddenly,
A glimmer appeared beneath the soil.
She brushed it gently,
It was a small gem.
It was the gem of love.
She held it up,
It shimmered softly,
And it was warm in tone.
This one feels gentle,
She said.
Wei looked at it.
Love,
He said.
But not the kind of love you chase,
He continued,
But the kind of love that remains.
When you open your heart.
The woman's expression softened.
I thought love come from others,
She said.
Wei shook his head gently.
Love can be shared,
He said,
But it begins with you.
In how you hold yourself.
In how you give yourself self-love.
Now she felt something stir in her chest.
A softness,
A feeling that she hadn't allowed in a long time.
The feeling of love.
They continued now,
And another gem emerged.
It was cooler,
Quieter,
The gem of peace.
This one feels still,
She said.
Wei nodded.
Peace,
He said.
Not the absence of noise,
But the presence of something deeper.
The peace within.
She closed her eyes briefly,
Feeling it.
Even with thoughts still moving,
Something underneath remained steady.
It's always been here,
She whispered,
And Wei smiled.
Then there was another gem.
The gem of kindness.
This one feels warm,
Open,
She said.
Kindness,
Wei said.
But the woman frowned slightly.
I've been kind to others,
She said,
But not always to myself.
Wei's gaze was gentle.
Then this is where your practice begins.
Practice kindness to yourself.
So she held the gem closer,
Not as something to give away,
But something to include herself in.
The gentle power of kindness.
The next gem was slightly harder to uncover.
It resisted.
It hid deeper.
She grew somewhat frustrated.
I can't find it,
She said.
Wei said nothing.
So she paused.
She remembered her breath.
She softened.
And then slowly,
The gem revealed itself.
The gem of trust.
This one feels uncertain,
She said.
Wei nodded.
Trust,
He said.
Not certainty,
But the willingness to stay without needing to know.
The woman exhaled slowly.
Yes,
She said.
That feels true.
Trust in myself.
And so they continued in quiet rhythm.
Then unexpectedly,
A small,
Radiant gem appeared.
It was brighter than the others.
It was the gem of joy.
And she smiled without thinking.
This one feels light,
She said.
And Wei smiled,
Too.
Joy,
He said.
But notice,
He added gently,
It appeared when you were no longer searching so hard.
And the woman,
She laughed softly.
I wasn't even looking for it.
And Wei,
He said,
Joy often arrives that way,
Quietly,
When there is space.
The feeling of joy within.
And then finally,
Another gem came.
Not with effort,
But just as she simply rested her hand in the soil.
And it was the gem of contentment.
She almost missed it because it was small,
Subtle,
But deeply steady.
This one feels enough,
She said.
And Wei nodded,
Contentment.
Not because everything is perfect,
But because in this moment,
Nothing is missing.
And so,
The woman,
She closed her eyes.
She felt her breath moving gently.
Her body softened into the earth beneath her.
And for the first time,
She felt no need to change anything.
She looked at her hands.
They were still covered in dirt,
But now she saw them differently.
The dirt isn't the problem,
She said slowly.
Wei smiled.
But it's part of the uncovering,
She continued.
And Wei nodded.
Yes,
He said,
And part of what makes these gems so meaningful.
So meaningful in our lives.
So,
You do not need to avoid the difficult,
Messy,
Uncertain parts of your life.
You do not need to rush past them.
Because within them,
Patiently,
Quietly,
Are the gems of love,
Of peace,
Of kindness,
Of trust,
Of joy,
Of contentment,
And of your beautiful heart.
Peace,
Kindness,
Trust,
Joy,
Contentment,
Heart.
And sometimes with a gentle breath and a willingness to stay,
You begin to realize they were never separate from you.
And once you have touched them,
These gems,
The question is not how to hold onto them,
But just how to remain close to them.
Like the garden,
They do not need to be forced to grow.
They just need space,
Attention,
A soft returning.
So,
Love remains when you soften towards yourself.
Peace remains when you pause even for a single breath.
And kindness remains when you include yourself in your care.
Trust remains when you allow life to unfold without gripping so tightly.
Joy remains when you notice those small,
Quiet,
Joyful moments.
And contentment remains when you rest in what is already here.
Not perfectly,
Not all at once,
But just gently again and again.
So,
When your mind becomes busy,
Just return to your breath.
When your heart feels heavy,
Return to your presence.
And when you feel lost,
Return to this moment.
And remember that these gems are not something you carry away from the Earth.
They are something you've learned to recognize right where you are.
Right in this moment within you.
And over time,
What once felt like effort becomes a beautiful,
Quiet way of being.
It's a soft awareness,
A steady presence,
A deeper trust in yourself and in your beautiful life.
And so,
Wherever you go,
Through ease or difficulty,
Through clarity or uncertainty,
You begin to walk not in search of something missing,
But in quiet companionship with what has always been within you.
Namaste,
My friend.
