Brief daily meditation has supported attention, memory, and mood in people new to the practice (Basso et al., 2018). As an adjunct to care, mindfulness reduced trauma-related symptoms with a moderate Hedges' g of 0.51 (95% CI 0.31 to 0.71, favouring practice over control), where the average participant fared better than about two-thirds of those not practicing (Taylor et al., 2020). What is not yet supported: any trial of gatha practice itself, long-term follow-up, or claims that it replaces treatment for a diagnosed condition.
Across the wider mindfulness and meditation research that gatha practice belongs to, regular practice is linked with modest reductions in anxiety and stress, small gains in attention and mood, and a measurable shift toward calmer autonomic function (Montero‐Marín et al., 2019), (Goyal et al., 2014), (Basso et al., 2018), (Kirk & Axelsen, 2020). The main areas studied are anxiety, depression, stress, attention, and trauma-related symptoms, mostly in mixed adult samples. Two limits are worth naming. Gatha practice itself has never been tested in a trial, so every finding here is borrowed from related meditation, and even in that broader work mindfulness often performs about as well as, not better than, other self-help approaches such as exercise or biofeedback (Esi et al., 2015).
