The active phase uses fast, deep, sustained breathing to induce an activated, non-ordinary state; grounding/integration is the still, quiet phase that follows it, designed to return the body to ordinary settled awareness. The two are sequential parts of one session, not the same practice.
Grounding (earthing)
Earthing refers to physical skin contact with the earth's surface for claimed health effects, an unrelated wellness practice that happens to share the word grounding. Here, grounding means settling the nervous system back to baseline after breathwork, not contact with the ground itself.
Somatic Experiencing and TRE (trauma-release practices)
These are distinct therapeutic modalities that intentionally evoke and track tremoring or discharge to process trauma. Grounding/integration may include spontaneous shaking or release as the body settles, but it is a recovery window after breathwork rather than a structured trauma treatment.
Savasana (final relaxation in yoga)
Savasana is the still, supine rest that closes a yoga practice; grounding/integration looks similar in posture but follows activating breathwork and centres on letting emotional and autonomic material complete, not on concluding a movement sequence.

Moderate but indirect evidence supports grounding and integration for relieving stress and helping an activated body settle, with the clearest signal being lower self-reported stress in students, employees, and general adults (Elaine et al., 2018), (Rich et al., 2021), (Jeong et al., 2018), (Bartlett et al., 2021). Evidence for easing anxiety is mixed, with some trials showing benefit and others little change (Yu et al., 2013), (Kamal et al., 2024). What is not yet supported: any trial isolating this grounding phase itself, large controlled studies, long-term follow-up, or any claim that it treats a diagnosed condition. All of the current support is borrowed from related mindfulness and slow-breathing practices rather than measured for grounding and integration directly.
A wound-up, on-alert feeling can start to loosen during the grounding phase, when lying still and letting the breath slow signals to the nervous system that the effortful part is over. In studies of related calming and mindfulness practices, people report feeling meaningfully less stressed after regular practice (Elaine et al., 2018), (Bartlett et al., 2021), though this comes from adjacent practices rather than grounding and integration itself.
Calming, present-focused practices reliably lower self-reported stress, and grounding and integration is understood to work the same way as the settling end of that family (Elaine et al., 2018), (Bartlett et al., 2021). One large six-week mindfulness course found a before-to-after drop in perceived stress of Cohen's d = 1.0, a large change meaning the average participant finished less stressed than about 84 percent of where the group started, though this was an uncontrolled pre-post sample with no comparison group and likely overstates the effect (Bartlett et al., 2021). Smaller studies record higher heart-rate variability and lower cortisol during quiet practice, while anxiety findings vary from trial to trial (Abid et al., 2016), (Tang et al., 2007), (Yu et al., 2013). The main limit is directness, since no controlled trial has yet tested the breathwork grounding phase on its own, so the findings are inferred from adjacent meditation and mindfulness research.

Finding: This study compared long-term meditators, short-term meditators, and non-meditators on a heartbeat-detection task, a test of how accurately people can sense their own heartbeat, and found no difference between the groups. In other words, meditation experience did not sharpen this particular measure of body awareness. For practitioners, that's a useful reality check: body-focused practices may still build a richer felt sense of the body, but you shouldn't expect them to measurably improve every kind of internal accuracy, at least not this cardiac one. Because the study simply compared existing groups rather than tracking change over time, it tells us about differences between practitioners, not about what practice itself causes.
