The Stillness Sessions 2: The Trap Of What's Next
The trap of what's Next is the insidious belief that something better is always just ahead. It keeps attention leaning forward, never quite landing where life is actually happening. Each moment becomes a stepping stone instead of a place to stand. And in chasing the next, we unknowingly abandon the only thing that is ever here.

So hello,
Welcome.
To another stillness session.
Remember we use different words stillness,
Silence,
Aware space,
Presence,
Beingness,
The just pointers.
That's what they are guys,
They're just pointers,
Just to point you to the experience.
OK?
So we don't get hung up on the words.
So,
Stillness.
We all want it and we all want some inner stillness.
So we're just going to explore it.
I want us to get a taste of it.
Because that's really what it's about.
Rather than just remain a concept or an idea.
So each of these sessions,
Just go through them,
Just go through them one by one,
Revisit them.
Let yourself get a taste of it don't be in a rush don't be in a hurry because this Being in a hurry is exactly what this.
Session is about.
I call it the cult of next.
Because mind is obsessed with next.
It keeps Dreaming up a past.
In order that it can also dream up a future.
Now going into the past for practical purposes is fine,
Or just remembering a nice time,
That's not a problem.
But if we live in the past and the future,
That's where the trouble is.
The future.
I'm going to have a meditation in a few moments.
The future is a concept.
It's a useful concept.
But the mind keeps going there and we believe what the mind is telling us about this future.
And that's where a lot of the suffering is.
Just sit quietly.
Just take a deep breath or two.
I want to notice.
When the mind when your attention gets lost in mind and the mind The thought is about future,
About the next.
What's going to happen next?
Then I'm going to bring you back to this stillness.
In which the next thing happens.
Don't spend your life nexting it away.
Let's just for a few moments feel the breath,
Eyes open or closed A repetitive silence.
Periods of me saying a few words.
Just feeling the end of the out-breath.
I just notice.
There's a certain stillness even to the breath.
The breath is just the breath.
And don't look for an object when I talk about stillness or space.
It's more of a felt sense.
So become aware of the body.
For a few moments,
Let's just sit like a mountain.
Still.
Not rigid,
Just still.
Just sensing into this stillness.
As natural movement of the breath.
Little twitches,
They're fine.
That's it.
Just sensing into this stillness.
It's within the body but also feel the space around the body.
Again,
Don't try hard.
It's all about trying.
It's already here.
Just tune into it.
It includes the sounds.
They never disturb this stillness.
This presence.
I want you to notice.
Just when the mind is going into.
What next?
Is it the next moment?
The next breath?
Later what we're gonna have for dinner notice that,
Ah.
That it's obsession.
Intoxicated with nexting.
With next.
Just drop it.
No drama,
Just drop.
And open back to this sense of presence,
To the silence.
That's it.
It's simple.
It's obvious.
But the mind is looking for something else,
Something next.
This is not enough.
To the mind.
What's your mind labelling this?
Boring?
Nothing?
Be careful of this,
This is.
.
.
Useless,
This isn't of no use to you.
That's it.
Just keep it very very simple.
Again just feeling into this sense of presence if you lose your way it's okay it's just habitual The mind doesn't want to be here.
On to the next thing.
Or pasting.
Wants to be commentating.
Remember this stillness,
This silence,
This presence isn't a thing.
It's just an aware space which includes the body.
It's what we're all yearning for.
And it's right here.
And it's always right here.
You've just forgotten it.
Been so preoccupied with mind and all its preoccupations,
All its obsessions.
We've forgotten that this is here.
This is a remembrance.
Don't be a member of this cult,
This cult of next.
No.
A thought appear within this.
Beingness,
This aware presence,
Aware space.
You can't turn it off.
Thought come and go,
Don't they?
They move,
They come and go,
They change.
This doesn't.
The space doesn't change.
And we miss it!
OK.
So carry on for a few moments,
A few minutes with your eyes closed or whatever you're doing and just be quiet if you wish noticed you in the day when you're nexting,
Even washing the dishes.
You know,
Walking the dog,
Or.
.
.
Sending a text how You might be rushing through this moment to get to the next moment.
Mind has been doing it for so long with most of us now it's just it's just automatic and we just go with it.
I was like skim across life.
It's like skimming across where we want is depth And that's where the stillness is.
It's here,
It's already here.
You don't need to go anywhere to get it.
Just need to be recognized.
Tasted once again,
Become intimate with it.
Become intimate with.
This stillness.
10 minutes a day.
Tamizadeh Swaizadeh are once a day.
And notice during the day or one year.
Oh,
There we go.
No drama,
No criticism,
No judgment.
Just let it go.
To the body,
To the sensations,
Come back to the sounds,
Come back to that which isn't a thought.
What's not a fold?
You're so oriented to go into thinking to work anything out.
This doesn't need working out.
Trying to work this out doesn't work.
It's an obstacle.
Don't try to work it out.
Go direct.
When I say stillness,
Go direct to that sense of presence,
That sense of silence,
That sense of stillness.
Okay guys,
Thank you very much
