Balancing The Masculine And The Feminine Energies Within
This meditation is about balancing the masculine and feminine energies in us. How do we straddle between giving and receiving? Society has restricted us in believing that masculine qualities belong to men and feminine qualities belong to women. How do we embrace the aspects of ourselves that we have swept under the rug because others have told us to? How do we unify a fractured self into wholeness?
Transcript
So for today's meditation,
We're connecting the left and the right,
The masculine and the feminine energies of our systems and making sure that there's a coherent balance between the two,
Almost like a DNA spiral and a helix.
And the point of equanimity and the point of,
Or the zero point rather,
Is at the Sushumna,
Which is the central axis of the spine.
Typically in our day to day,
We are too much yang energy.
There is a lot of fire,
It's hot,
It's daytime,
And the sun energy is all about moving forwards and growing towards the sun,
Driving with our will.
So it's a very masculine force,
Whereas the feminine forces,
The yin energy is all at night,
It's sleep,
It's stream time,
It's all of the invisible things that happen underneath the surface of our mind.
When we are not in balance or when we're stressed,
It's not always the case,
But more often than not,
The yang is out of balance in that there's too much of it,
Especially in a tropical place like Singapore,
Where there's so much fire energy already in the weather.
And this may be the opposite if you go to yinner places like Iceland,
Where it's sunlight is different,
It's cooler,
People may tend to stay in a little bit more and move a lot slower.
So we'll connect to the qualities of what masculine means for us and also what feminine means,
And then looking at those qualities in our lives and seeing if we can find that zero point in between.
That was a little explanation about what we're going to do.
Okay,
So let's get to it.
Let's start with some aromatherapy.
Here,
Take a drop of this,
Place that on your palms and give yourself a rub.
Go ahead and create a cup shape around your face and take a deep breath in,
Inhaling the scent of orange,
Bergamot,
Grapefruit.
There's a little bit of lime in there and lemon as well,
Some cinnamon,
Nutmeg,
Ginger,
And a little bit of vanilla.
So lots of different notes there.
See if you can pick out all the individual notes and also feel them working as an orchestra all together.
Now this blend somehow works.
There's a little bit of grounding there,
There's some uplifting,
There's some watery notes in there,
There's some earth tones,
And for sure there's some fire in the ginger.
And notice how that makes you feel.
The sense of smell is the only sense in the human faculty that allows us to connect directly to our emotional state,
And that's through the limbic system in the brain.
And so when you take deep breaths in and deep breaths out,
We're actually affecting change in the entire emotional system.
As you inhale,
Notice if there are any memories or perhaps interesting sensations that are arising in the body,
Perhaps certain thoughts or feelings even.
And without touching the eyes,
Very gently rub that oil around the temples,
The forehead,
The sinuses,
The cheek,
Jaw area,
Around the mustache line,
Goatee area,
The sides of the nostrils,
Up to the bridge of the nose.
Wherever feels right,
Intuitively find where there is tension in your face.
Remember to avoid the eyes.
You can even send it up to the scalp,
At the top of the head,
Into the sides of the skull,
The back of the skull,
Into the neck,
The front of the neck,
The throat,
Underneath your chin.
In the next few moments,
Supporting and nurturing your face,
Your whole head,
Your neck,
Your shoulders even,
Your shoulders even.
And enjoy it.
Enjoy the sensation of smelling all of these scents around you.
And also enjoy the sensation of giving yourself care and nurture and the time to feel,
To feel yourself literally with your hands,
Noticing if there are any knots along your arms,
Around the ridges of your chest,
Underneath the collarbones,
Perhaps even your neck,
Around your arms,
Around the ridges of your chest,
Underneath the collarbones,
Perhaps.
So through this internal scanning,
We are deepening our awareness and our presence with ourself.
Spend the next 30 seconds finishing up whatever it is that you're doing.
And when you have finished and you feel you're more or less coming to a place to receive,
Let that go,
Let your hands go and come to a comfortable sitting position.
At any point in time,
If you feel like you need to move,
Let your hands go,
And come to a comfortable sitting position.
At any point in time,
If you feel like you need to move,
Feel free to move.
Or if you need to lay down,
Feel free to lay down.
And bring your awareness to the earth.
And bring your awareness to the rivers that are underneath the earth.
The earth.
We're focusing on two rivers first,
The Yin and the Yang River.
In Sanskrit,
The Yin River is the Ida and the Yang is the Pingala.
Or we know them as the masculine and feminine rivers,
Or the sun and the moon.
Connect to the Yang River,
The masculine river.
See how that looks in your visualization.
Notice the speed of how the current is moving.
Is it fast?
Is it slow?
Is the water warm or is it cool?
Is it the type of river you want to step into?
Or is it the type of river that you have to raft down some rapids to get through?
Observe the quality of the water moving through this river.
And this is your Yang River.
Observe all the qualities of the water moving through this river.
Observe all the qualities that are quote unquote masculine in your life.
And those qualities include practicality,
Systematizing,
Point A to point B,
Outlining,
Math,
Logical thinking.
Rationalizing.
Also observe points in your life where there is an over dominance of will of ego.
Not that ego is wrong or bad,
But when out of balance,
It may be destructive.
Notice points in your life where you over assert yourself and you sacrifice who you really are,
Which is this place of balance and zero point that we talked about.
Sacrifice who you really are,
Which is this place of balance and zero point that we talked about.
So notice all the people in your life that have an over abundance of Yang energy or perhaps they choose to be overly Yang.
And these imbalances may come out in aggression or being overly ambitious,
Being a perfectionist,
Being a perfectionist,
Overdoing,
Overperforming,
Being overly competitive.
Notice all those people in your life that perhaps affect the way you are in relationship to those things.
Because there is no right and there is no wrong.
Look at also the positive aspects of the Yang energy and how the right amount of ambition is useful.
The right amount of drive,
The right amount of inspiration to act,
To do,
To take action,
To take a stand.
Aggression coming from anger,
The right amount of anger to stimulate motivation and passion to make changes.
Notice all the different points in your life when you've benefited from having this masculine Yang energy present.
Balancing the checkbook,
Creating budgets,
Timelines,
All of these great things that the Yang energy can do.
Structure,
Form,
Logic,
Reason.
Also look at the people around you in your life that have this benefit as well.
Because we work as a collective.
What we see our friends doing,
Our family doing,
We want to do.
We want to feel like we belong.
And so when others are successful in embodying the Yang energy,
We want that as well.
And so we can mimic,
We can try to duplicate what they're experiencing.
So notice,
Are there any influential people in your life that have informed how you access this Yang energy?
How you access this Yang energy?
And now weigh the two,
Not to judge,
But to observe.
Observing to see if there is a balance between the two,
The overuse,
The overaggress state of being and the point of balance of having the benefits of this Yang energy.
In your mind's eye,
You can almost make it like a Venn diagram.
Perhaps one side of the circle in the Venn diagram is bigger than the other.
And don't judge it,
Just look,
As if you're taking inventory,
Taking notes,
That's all.
Purely for observation.
If you find yourself doubting or self-criticizing while you're doing this,
Take a moment,
Pause and breathe,
And come back to listing.
Listing these observations without attachment is if you're looking at your life from a distance as a third party.
Now bring your awareness to the other river underneath the earth,
The Yin river.
Notice how this river looks in your visual.
Notice the current,
The speed of the current.
Notice the environment surrounding this Yin river,
The temperature in the air.
It's nighttime,
The moon is out.
There's a different atmosphere here.
This is the landscape of the mysterious,
The intuitive.
Connect to this river.
Thousands of stories long ago given to the earth.
These mountains tall,
They are my only walls.
In this temple,
Where are you bound?
Follow the river.
Feel its connection throughout the entire grid of the earth,
Moving into the mountains,
Into other landscapes,
And how this Yin river threads every single surface area of this earth together.
Connect to the quality of nighttime,
Of dream time,
To the stories of dreams.
What are your dreams?
Current dreams,
Past dreams,
Future dreams?
It's in your hands,
It's in your love we rise above.
It's in your song I hear my soul.
So rise up my sisters,
Rise up.
Let us lift each other up.
Sing it from your heart and from your soul.
Connect to all the instances in your life where you have felt this connection to intuition,
To emotions,
To feeling,
To dreams,
Past,
Present and future,
To your heart's desire,
To empathy and compassion for yourself and for others,
Vulnerability,
The illogical,
Irrational way of being.
Notice the times when you have overdone it,
Perhaps a moded too much lash out too much felt,
Felt so much that it hurt.
Notice all those moments where it felt painful to feel,
Where it felt painful to be,
It felt painful to exist.
And the currents were so strong that you want it to be no more.
Connect to those instances.
In your eyes I see the giver of this life.
In contrast,
Observe all the times that this has benefited you connecting to the mysterious,
To the underbelly of the world,
Of your world,
Of your dreams,
Of hoping and desiring.
Connect to those times where you benefited from feeling too much,
From loving too much,
From hurting too much.
What were the major points in your life where you had to make a decision based on your feeling,
Your gut feeling,
Your heart's feeling,
Your bones?
When was the last time that happened that you felt your way,
That you felt your way through your experiences?
When was the last time you empathized with someone else or showed outward compassion to a friend or stranger in need?
Creating an abstract Venn diagram,
One that flows like water,
Of the positive benefits of embodying this yin energy and when it's become overwhelming.
See both sides.
And also notice influences in your life from people around you.
People that have perhaps been too unstable,
Too intense in the way they feel that it scared you.
But also look at the people who influenced you in your life,
Who felt their way through life in a way that was grounded,
That had direction.
They felt their way through the life with purpose.
Look at those people.
Now,
Using the structure from the masculine forces and the freedom of flow from the feminine forces that lie within you,
Combine the two together.
See the two rivers merging underneath the earth,
Intertwining like a helix,
Like the blueprint that is in your cells,
The DNA flowing.
And see that rising up from the base of the spine,
Through the heart center,
Through the throat,
Out to the crown of the head.
And at the center point,
Focus on the third river,
The zero point.
It's the convergence of the two sides,
Of left and right,
Of sun and moon,
Of masculine and feminine,
Of positive and negative,
Of light and dark.
It's the integrative potential that we have within all of us.
To see the benefit in negative and in positive,
To see the opportunity in the dark and the learning potential in the dark.
Now,
Visualize your life moving forward in the flow of the yin and the yang river working harmoniously together.
The yang outlining,
Planning,
Creating structure,
Creating pathways towards success.
And the yin bringing excitement and newness,
New experiences,
Spontaneity,
Freedom,
Bringing a sense of joy and of love and purity into the experiences within the form,
Within the structures,
Within the systems.
The yin brings the possibility of changing direction and the two inspire each other to move forward.
See your life moving as these two rivers intertwining in harmonious flow.
And feel that in your body,
Feel it move in your body physically,
Energetically.
There's any movements in the body allow it to happen.
Allow the inspiration to be as it is and let it express itself.
It's the yin expressing itself in the yang.
It's the formless energy expressing itself in the structure of your bones and your body.
The yin is the shakti,
The energy that moves through you,
The creative force,
The yang is your body,
Your bones,
Your muscles,
Your tissue,
Holding it all in place.
They exist because of each other,
Not separate of each other.
Breathing deeply now into the fullness of who you are,
Into all the aspects of yourself.
Breathe into the light and the dark.
Breathe into the sun aspects of you and the moon aspects of you.
Those parts you that are visible and invisible,
The conscious and the unconscious parts,
The level headed and the strange parts of yourself.
Breathing with acceptance,
Breathing with nurture and support,
Nurture and support and trusting that we are exactly as we are.
We are exactly as it was supposed to be.
We are multi-dimensional and we're not designed to be anything less.
We are not designed to be anything less and trusting that we do not have to sacrifice or to give up any aspect of ourselves in order to achieve or strive for any concept or theory of what success is or is not.
Breathe in the comfort of knowing that everything is as it should be.
Breathe in the three rivers at the base of the earth.
Breathe in the three rivers at the bottom of the earth and feel them rising upwards,
Spiraling in through your feet,
Your legs,
The hips,
Intertwining like that DNA helix that is already in you,
Gritting through your bones,
Through the hips,
The lower back,
The ribs,
The shoulders,
The arms,
The neck,
The head.
Feel it all the way through with your entire body,
With your mind,
Your heart,
Your spirit and acknowledge that this is me.
This is me whole and complete.
This is me in my full power and continue breathing this in for as long as you need and in your own time and in your own way.
Slowly come back into the room.
Take as much time as you need.
You

Outstanding, though I need to spend more time with it before I have much to say about it. Not a great starting point if you are brand new to guided visualization, but once you feel comfortable with the technique, give this a try. Bears repeat listening.
