Welcome.
So to begin,
Find a comfortable seated position,
Your back upright but not rigid,
Your hands resting in your lap or on your knees,
And gently close your eyes.
Take a breath in,
And let it go.
We're going to do something a little different today.
Rather than trying to relax or achieve a particular state,
We're going to practice noticing.
Noticing what's already happening,
And discovering who or what is doing the noticing.
This is the practice of the witness.
So to begin,
Just become aware that you are aware.
Simple as that.
You're conscious right now.
Something in you knows that you're here,
Sitting,
Breathing,
Existing in this moment.
And that knowing quality,
That awareness,
Is what we're going to explore.
So take a breath in,
And notice that you know you're breathing.
There's something in you that's observing your breath.
So you are not the breath,
You're the one that's watching the breath.
And just sit with that for a few moments.
And thoughts will arise in your mind,
They always do.
And when a thought appears,
Rather than following it or fighting it,
Simply notice it.
You might even name it,
Thinking,
And return to the awareness that's watching.
You're not the thought,
You're the one noticing the thought.
And feelings may arise too.
Perhaps restlessness or calm.
Perhaps an emotion surfaces,
Curiosity,
Sadness,
Or ease.
Just notice it,
Name it if you like,
And recognize that you are the one observing it.
So the feeling is in your experience,
The witness is what's aware of that experience.
You are not the feeling,
You are the awareness in which the feeling arises.
And physical sensations are present too.
The weight of your body,
Warmth or coolness,
Tingling,
Ache.
Notice each sensation as it appears in the field of your awareness.
You are not the sensation,
You're the consciousness that perceives it.
And now let all of these thoughts,
Feelings,
Sensations,
Simply arise and pass in your awareness.
Like weather moving through an open sky.
The sky doesn't hold the clouds.
It doesn't resist them either.
It simply remains open,
Spacious,
Unchanged by whatever passes through.
So you are the sky,
Not the weather.
And rest here,
Not in a state of blankness,
But in a state of open,
Alert awareness.
If present and watching.
If you get pulled into a thought,
And you will,
That's part of the practice.
Simply notice that you got pulled.
That noticing in itself is the act of the witness returning.
So you can't fail at this.
Every moment of recognition is the practice working.
And here's something worth exploring.
Your awareness itself has no age.
When you close your eyes right now,
The awareness that's present is the same awareness that was present when you were a child and when you were a teenager.
And in every moment of your life since,
The content has changed constantly and consistently.
But the awareness has always simply been here.
And feeling into that,
The timeless quality of pure awareness.
Thoughts arise and pass.
Emotions arise and pass.
Even the body changes year by year.
But this open,
Watching presence remains constant.
You have been the witness of your entire life.
And rest in that recognition now.
And slowly begin to bring some awareness back to the physical sensations of the body.
The weight in your seat.
The breath moving.
And notice that even as you return your attention to the body,
The witness is still here,
Watching.
And the practice doesn't end when the meditation ends.
And throughout your day today,
See if you can catch a moment,
Just one,
Where you notice that you're noticing.
That brief recognition,
However small,
Is you as the witness.
Take a deeper breath in.
And breathe out.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
