Do you ever notice how much time we spend chasing what's next and how easy it is to forget what's already good?
We plan,
We reach,
We look ahead,
And sometimes in all that forward motion we overlook the quiet richness of what's right in front of us.
So this practice is an invitation to pause that forward momentum and just to come home to right now.
So go ahead and find a comfortable position,
Whatever way feels most supportive,
And you can close your eyes or you can let them rest gently,
Unfocused.
Just take a deep breath in and a slow breath out.
Let's do it again.
Inhale gently and exhale with ease.
With your next exhale,
See if you can let your shoulders drop just a bit,
Let your hands relax,
Let your face soften.
Okay,
Now let's just bring our attention to this very moment.
Not the idea of now,
But the felt experience of it,
The rhythm of your breath,
The sensations in your body,
The sounds around you if you can hear them.
We're just letting ourselves be here right now,
Without needing to change anything.
And you can ask yourself,
What's here right now that I can be grateful for?
There's no need to force an answer,
Just notice what comes.
The first thing that comes to mind,
There's no wrong answer.
Maybe it's the feeling of your body being supported.
Maybe it's the quiet around you,
Or maybe the sound of life happening.
Maybe it's simply this moment to pause out of your busy day.
Again,
There's no right thing to be grateful for.
It could be small,
It could be strange,
And it could even be a little messy.
Gratitude doesn't require perfection,
It just asks for presence.
Sitting here for a few moments,
Breathing in,
Breathing out,
And noticing what's already good.
Maybe you feel grateful for something that you often overlook.
A warm drink,
A favorite song,
A couple of minutes of silence.
Maybe it's something that you usually take for granted.
Your breath,
Your heart,
Your ability to be right here,
Right now.
Let's just take this moment to find one thing,
One small honest thing that you can appreciate.
For me,
It's the warm cup of coffee I'm holding in my hands.
Just hold that in your awareness,
Breathe with it.
Let that one simple moment just fill you with joy.
See if you can feel how it softens the moment.
How it changes your posture,
Your demeanor.
See if it brings a little more ease into your body.
And by the way,
If your mind wanders,
No worries,
Just come back to the breath.
Back to the question,
What is here,
Right now,
That I can be grateful for?
Let it be simple,
But let it be real,
Authentic.
I love this quote by Brother David Steiner-Rast,
Who says,
It's not happiness that makes us grateful.
It is gratefulness that makes us happy.
And it's so true,
Gratitude doesn't wait for perfect conditions.
It grows in the cracks.
And it blooms in the ordinary.
And ultimately,
It brings us back to what matters most,
Right?
Alright,
So let's take one last slow breath in.
And let it go.
And as you move through the rest of your day,
Just see if you can keep looking for those small moments of appreciation.
Let gratitude be less about effort and more about noticing.
Because even in the middle of everything,
This very moment is enough.
And in that moment,
There is something that is already good.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy,
And may you be at peace.
So grateful that you joined me today.
