COURSE

Overcoming Anxiety Using Sound

With Lyz Cooper: The British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST)

My name is Lyz Cooper, Founder and Principal of The British Academy Of Sound Therapy, thank you for choosing to join this course on Insight Timer. Over the next 10 days we will be looking at how and why sound and music can be so effective at helping to reduce anxiety and will find answers by exploring how our brains have evolved since our early ancestors walked the earth. In addition to specifically designed sound and music pieces there will be other exercises including visualisation, breathwork and self-reflection to deepen and enhance your experience. We will learn more about our nervous systems, how to recognise when we are in ‘fight or flight mode’ and find easy and quick ways to return to balance and calm. We will also be working with a self-reflective method known as the 5Rs. This is a useful tool for helping us to navigate challenging situations and transform negative thoughts and experiences into positive ones.

Meet your Teacher

Lyz began her journey with sound in 1994 when she had to leave a busy career in advertising due to a life-limiting illness. During this time she found that sound and music not only helped her relax, but certain sounds actually improved her health and well-being. This life-changing personal journey motivated her to find out more about how why sound and music can affect mind, body and emotions – she went to university, got an MA in Education and an MSc in Applied Music Psychology and conducted research to find out more. Today Lyz Cooper is one of the world’s thought leaders in the sound therapy field. Lyz is co-founder and director of the Therapeutic Sound Association – the first representing body of therapeutic sound in the world. She is also one of the original board members of the Global Listening Centre, an international organisation dedicated to promoting the importance of listening. She continues to conduct research, the results of which enrich the courses and projects at The British Academy of Sound Therapy and Lyz’s other companies under the Healthy Sound Group. Lyz’s compositions and music projects have received excellent feedback – listeners have reported becoming pain free, deeply relaxed and uplifted. The launch of the Radox Spa campaign in 2011 was a turning point – confirming that the mainstream was ready for consciously designed therapeutic music. The piece created by Marconi Union in consultation with Lyz was voted the ‘Most Relaxing Music Ever’ and came 11th out of 50 in Time Magazine’s Top 50 Best Inventions Awards and is still getting media attention today.

This course is a true winner…It was so enjoyable and illuminating that I intend to take it all over again. The music+sound pieces constructed so artfully for each session are simply out of this world. Just •so• phenomenal. Throughout, and without fail, Lyz is innovative, nurturing, pragmatic, explicatory, and excels at each aspect of her course. An ideal example of how this course excels in its discreet, episodic goals: I had just today completed day 28 of the I.T. mid-year reset challenge. The selected instructor attempted to guide listeners through a ‘box breathing’ exercise. It didn’t go as well as intended, based on voluminous feedback. Therafter, I pulled up and finished Lyz’s course by completing session 10–a fine wrap-up in which she also introduces a more complex poly-vagal breathing technique. She guided us so perfectly in that undertaking that I found myself continuing it automatically after just a brief instruction, with zero difficulty but with all the benefits. Her count—and when and how she allows her voice prompts to diminish and then blend into the sonic swirl was masterful. The effect? Near magic. THAT is how good she, and this course overall, truly is.😊🙌🏼🙏🏼

Liz Cooper has brought something unusual and opened my eyes to the power of sound in controlling anxiety. Since I am a hiker, the point of our human bipedalism may be a reason why m rhythmic sounds help alleviate anxiety is totally understandable to me. The best sound effect for me was the low humming drum sounds 🩶🩶 that increased in frequency. Amazing! Slow pace Definitely helps calm and fast pace Definitely trigger faster heart rate and anxiety.
