Welcome to this guided sleep meditation called The Owl and Me.
Let's begin.
Please squeeze your pillow,
Make it dreamy and fluffy and then settle into bed.
Please open your hands wide,
Letting go and waving goodbye this day.
Closing your eyes and let the eyes inside go up and down,
Up,
Down.
It's time to dream high and bright.
So relax deeply,
Get comfortable and cozy.
There is a wonderful bird,
Most magical,
The barn owl,
That is out tonight.
And it would be so nice if he paid you a visit.
So let's follow this huge feathery bird.
Now all barn owls are very pale in colour and slender,
With white feathers underneath.
Breathe into white,
White coloured feathers.
And rich golden brown and light grey feathers on top.
Breathe into golden feathers with a touch of grey.
And they all have a white heart-shaped face,
Yes,
A face like a big white love heart.
Plus large dark eyes,
For they are nocturnal and so it helps them to see well.
First,
You listen for the sound of the owl.
It isn't a hoot.
The barn owl is more of a screech,
Exciting.
Otherwise,
He is silent.
Mother Nature gave him superpowers,
Of super soft feathers.
And he must keep them dry,
A bit like your pillow.
Because they are soft,
They are silent as he flies.
You,
Yourself,
Pretend to be something else.
And like magic,
You are laid on the soft grass,
Under the moonlight and shining stars.
Pretending to be a long,
Skinny twig.
Perfect for an owl's nest.
And so he scoops down like a giant swing and scoops you up with everything that looks great for a nest.
You feel a wonderful breeze and the feeling of rising higher and higher.
He's off back to the woods.
The trees are big and strong and swish to the sound of the night wind.
He lands in front of a hole in the tree trunk and pushes you in,
And then himself.
It's very quiet inside the tree and smells really nice.
For they love to nest in pine trees.
Maybe you can remember this smell from Christmas trees.
And whilst you are settled into the nest,
With three warm eggs,
The owl smiles and talks to you.
Because he is wise.
He knows you are looking for an adventure.
Beyond a little wooden twig,
He will soon be a proud parent of three little owls.
And decides to tuck you under his wing and see the world tonight with him.
So off you go together,
Popping out that hole in the pine tree.
Out again,
Under the moon and shining stars that seem to be getting bigger and brighter.
He talks a little as he flies and wants you to know.
Often birds like him see nature,
Their medicine cabinet.
Looking for special herbs,
Unusual plants and prepare to go great distances to get them.
His bird feet claws are like a shopping basket and can hold and keep inside lots of little treasures from Mother Earth.
He wants you to know he is quiet when he flies.
For he is a big bird,
But needs to be in disguise just like you.
Maybe you remember at times someone popping up behind you,
But you simply didn't hear a thing.
Plus he has been given such extraordinary long wings.
And with his body small at the center,
Looks like a glider.
Yes,
Even you can go into a big sky with a glider aircraft and no noisy engine is needed.
For they are perfectly made to glide the air currents way up high.
And such a good view,
Like a jigsaw,
Able to see the full picture of everything around us.
For this brown owl has a wingspan of around 110 centimeters.
Anyway,
As he does hunt for food,
He too is hunted.
They are meat eaters and a natural part of the food chain.
So bigger birds or a lucky fox keeps the brown owl on his toes.
Listening with his sensitive ears and of course a very flexible head.
It's a bit like crossing a road,
Looking both ways for any fast traffic.
Look closer,
He says.
Even the feathers on the edge of his heart-shaped face create a disc,
Which works to trap and focus sound,
Rather like your own outer ears.
Plus,
One ear is higher than the other.
The owl's left ear captures sounds of below,
Whilst the right ear captures sounds from above.
He has the sound of things moving,
Meaning alive.
And thus works out exactly where its prey is hiding.
On this dark night or under natural long grass.
This is what it's like to be a brown owl that hunts for dinner in the dark,
Using super power hearing.
He is hungry and this is only when they need to hunt.
In a way it is common for most birds to eat little and often.
But he will want to provide for his own young family too,
Once they hatch.
And then begins the journey to teach them skills.
Even through their own mistakes,
Until they master being themselves.
A master brown owl.
So even your mistakes are growing up lessons to be a master too.
Notice how he does fly.
Silent of course.
And can appear to hover over small rodents that they hunt.
Once they find something,
They will give a brief beat of their huge wings.
And then drop their feet first.
Catching perfectly in this way.
It's a bit like one of those toy grabbing fun fair machines.
Hoping to win a prize.
Now brown owls love the open countryside and farmlands.
Especially old barns.
And they were made especially with owl windows.
These openings high in the gable end to access the loft.
You yourself may have a bedroom in the attic.
The rooftop of your home.
Now barn owls were once a popular form of pest control.
Which farmers are always happy to see them.
It's quite important as time goes by.
That people of all ages protect the countryside for the barn owl.
So when you yourself go exploring on foot.
Make sure the only thing you leave behind are your footprints.
He hopes you can see that all nature,
The land is not just beautiful.
But so magical.
Every time you see something in bloom.
But it is time for you to magically go home to your safe nest.
So he looks to land on a tree nearest to your home.
Enjoy the ride.
So calm and so quiet.
A little bit of peace on earth at bedtime.
And as he settles so quietly in this tree.
He begins to do a beautiful long stretch of all his body.
Which pushes out a single golden feather.
Lastly he smiles from his heart shaped face.
Then he listens to the wind.
For that magical nature moment.
And floats you back down.
With his owl feather.
Remember which is very soft.
And silent.
And such a lovely golden colour too.
And you are carried by the wind itself.
To your pillow.
With a goodnight owl screech.
Not a hoot.
This sound carried on the wind to you.
Making sure you are safely home in bed.
So goodnight little owl.
It's time to sleep.
