Hi,
I'm Katie.
Welcome to Sitting Meditation Posture.
I just wanted to talk to you about different ways to set up your posture if you're sitting on the ground.
So right now I'm sitting on a yoga mat,
But I also have a folded blanket under my hips.
What that's doing is elevating my hips slightly so that my knees are a little bit lower than my hips.
There's many different ways to do this.
It all depends on how your body feels when you're sitting.
So I wanted to show you several different options for exploring if you're meditating on the floor.
So option one is the blanket like I showed you.
It's one of these beautiful woven blankets.
I just had it folded in kind of like a little roll under my hips.
You can stack a few of those if you'd like.
Any blankets work for that.
Another option is this kind of thing.
It's a cushion,
Also called a zafu.
You can also use like a pillow from your bed or whatever you have around.
This is going to give you a lot more height with your hips.
And usually what I recommend is that you come somewhat to the edge of it.
And then find your cross-legged position and see how that feels.
On your knees and hips.
And here you can see I'm a lot more elevated.
Is actually pretty comfortable.
I haven't sat on one of these for a while.
I might have to switch to the Zafu,
The world of the Zafu.
So that's another option.
And then from here,
Whether you're on a blanket or elevated even higher,
It can be really nice to have some support under your knees if you feel like that's something you need.
So I have Over here I have some yoga blocks.
We can also use books,
You can use rolled up blankets.
More pillows,
Whatever you have on hand.
And just find a way to put them comfortably under your thighs or your knees.
Essentially,
I want you to explore with finding a posture that feels comfortable for you.
Because we're trying to still the body.
With the hope that the mind will follow suit.
It's not meant to be a punishing practice,
So if you have any discomfort at any point,
Of course,
Please adjust as needed.
So those are a few options.
I also wanted to show you what you can do if you have a wall behind you,
Just for a little bit of additional support.
So I'm going to try with my blanket one more time.
I'm putting it right against the wall there.
Maybe I'll pull it out just a little bit.
Then I'm going to sit on the edge of it.
And my back isn't against the wall yet.
You're welcome to try that.
If you do that,
I would encourage you to get your hips as close to the wall as you can.
But I'm going to take a yoga block and put it the long way right behind my sacrum.
Between my sacrum and the wall.
And then I can scoot back a little bit.
Just to close any gaps.
And that's going to help me sit up nice and tall and still feel supported without just completely relying on the wall.
So you can experiment with that as well.
And like I was saying before,
It doesn't have to be a yoga block.
It can be a rolled up blanket.
It can be a pillow.
Anything that you feel is giving you that support that you need.
This technique also works if you're sitting on a chair and you want to use the back of a chair.
So now that you're set up,
You can find one of my guided meditations on Insight Timer on my profile and try it out.
Thank you so much.
See you next time.
