Hindu Concepts To Improve Your Daily Practice

With Jim Rajan

Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Hinduism insists on the brother and sisterhood of not only all mankind, but of all that lives’. This ancient religion has brought us some of the most well-known pillars of meditation practice. And yet, our separation from them causes them to fall into mysticism. This course puts the theory into practice in a simple way. It’s designed to enrich your experience of this life, clarify many lost foundations, and help you undergo a transformation from the inside-out. In this course, you will learn how to bring new meaning to your life, how to cultivate a growth mindset, and how to life in a more confidence, empowered way.

Lesson 1

The Power Of Dharma

Dharma or ‘living with virtue’ is all about action. And that’s where we will start: learning to take purposeful action. We will begin this course by connecting to the principle of dharma in a practical way, looking at how you can equate it with your own life. Dharma is a path, a way of using your life and reaping the great benefits of doing so. Let us delve into dharma now. Widen your field of vision and bring into view the possibilities you already have all around you.

Lesson 2

Understanding Atman

The simplest meaning of Atman is ‘self’ or ‘breath’, but don’t let that fool you. This second session is about understanding the force of life itself. The principle of one’s life, your centre, your essence. But this is not simply about theory. It’s about putting these ancient teachings into practice. Feeling them. So, we will begin by working on the connection to Atman, to your inherent wisdom, forming an intrinsic bond to the fountain from which you spring.

Lesson 3

Escape From Samsara

In light of the fragility and impermanence of life, how can we find happiness? Samsara, as we are told, means ‘the cycle of aimlessly drifting, wandering in a mundane existence’. Is there escape from Samsara? Its eternal web is at the core of all creation. This is the continuous process of reincarnation, the unending cycle of rebirth of the soul or spirit. But Samsara is not an eternal trudge along a fixed line of destiny. In this session we will look at the greatness of this concept, and how it propels you to live with value and dedication to a cause. This leads us beautifully into the fundamental principle of Karma.

Lesson 4

Do You Have Bad Karma?

The Hindi word ‘karma’ is the universal law of cause and effect. Karma is often represented as an endless knot in Nepalese temple prayer wheels. In this session we will learn how to ‘use’ karma, instead of becoming a victim of it. Hindus believe that we create the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ consequences of life through our actions, thoughts, and words. Similar causes produce similar effects. Let us dive into this very powerful law, so that we can apply it instantly and reap the rewards of doing so.

Lesson 5

Brahman - The Universe In Your Hand

The Sanskrit word Brahman refers to a transcendent power which is beyond the universe. Though at times it is translated as ‘God’, the two concepts are not the same. Brahman is the energy itself, the energy of creation, the latent potential energy before it is ‘used’. It pervades everything. Brahman might be considered ‘source’. The word Brahman connotes the highest universal principle. Now, let us see how that relates to you in your everyday life.

Lesson 6

What Is The Use Of A God?

Most hindus believe in God, but what this means varies greatly in different traditions. The Sanskrit words "Bhagavan" and "Ishvara" mean ’Lord’ or ‘God’, and they reveal an absolute reality who creates, maintains, and destroys the universe over and over again. In this context, God can be approached in a number of ways which can help you define your own self-identity and inner power in solid, lasting ways.

Lesson 7

Guru-Ji

Do you need a guru? Are they fake or real? Gurus are generally very highly revered and can become the focus of devotion (Bhakti) in some classical traditions. A fundamentally important teaching is that spiritual understanding is conveyed from teacher to disciple through a lineage. When one guru passes away, he or she is usually replaced by a successor. The role of the guru in our modern times is starting to change. We focus on this development in session 7.

Lesson 8

Change Your Understanding Of Discipline With Bhakti

Bhakti is a love, a devotion, a surrender. But this does not mean it is about giving away your power. A devoted one is a kind-hearted person who gives themselves to the path. One who stands by the principles of inner work. One who learns to stand in their own discipline, courage, and inner belief. As we progress through this work you start to find your inner strength and inner vision.

Lesson 9

How Non-Dualism Affects You

The great Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti once said, ‘Separation equals conflict’. In this session we embrace the concept of advaita. "Advaita" refers to non-dualism, or the non-distinction between realities. It is the oneness of atman and brahman. The Hindu concept of advaita refers to the idea that all of the universe is one essential reality, and that all facets and aspects of the universe are ultimately an expression or appearance of that one reality. You are, therefore, connected to all things. A part of all things. And so, you have influence over the whole.
