This session is for you if you're experiencing high emotional arousal states or extreme emotional reactions.
Often they can feel very confusing and overwhelming.
But in the end,
If we break it down,
The core of them is usually fear.
Fear of something,
Anxiety about something.
And it's very easy in our modern world to distract ourselves from those feelings.
We scroll on the phone.
We watch something,
And sometimes that helps,
But most of the time actually just increases that,
That reaction,
That feeling.
Here is a small practice for you,
How you can help to dial that down.
To start with,
I invite you to find a textured object.
Just look around you.
It can be a towel,
It can be a pillow,
Anything.
Literally anything that just has a texture that is not the screen of your phone or the laptop.
It can be stone or a leaf or fabric,
Whatever you just find.
And I invite you to just feel the ridges and the bumps and the softness.
Hold it in your hand.
Use your fingers to explore more and find out more about the landscape of that texture.
Let yourself get really curious about it.
Inhale gently through your nose while you do that.
And exhale.
And do it again.
And then you exhale halfway,
And you pause.
And then you finish the exhale.
This double exhale signals to your body that it's safe to calm down from the alert.
And touching.
The fabric.
Is an anchor.
It is an anchor to remind.
The brain and the body that you can focus on something that is real.
And that you don't have to just focus on the fear.
By engaging all different types of senses.
Like seeing,
Hearing,
Smelling,
Tasting,
Touching.
Your body is signaling.
Other signals to your brain than just the fear.
Because the amygdala in the fear state is activated,
It is creating all these stories,
The what-ifs,
The.
.
.
What is going to happen type of story in order to protect you.
But it can get stuck in that negative feedback loop.
So the more sensory information you are sending from your body to your brain,
That loop.
Is.
Distracted.
And interrupt it.
And like this,
You can choose what type of information are sent to your brain in that moment.
And you can allow yourself to anchor in those moments.
You can allow yourself.
To land,
You can just allow yourself to land.
You're not a victim of your anxiety.
You are able to regulate.
Actually,
Our bodies were meant to regulate themselves.
And you can learn how to.
Just try and not run away from it.
Try and notice it,
Recognize it.
And use your body and your sensory capacity and information.
To signal other signals in your body.
You got this.
I'm proud of you.
See you next time.
